Sonamarg, located in Ganderbal District of Central Kashmir, which have registered over seven lakhs tourist footfalls last year has emerged as major tourism hotspot in Kashmir with the introduction of skiing in the first time in its history recently.
The Tourism Department of jammu and kashmir have recently undertaken a few initiatives to introduce new winter adventure sports this year. This is first time in history skiing has been introduced in Sonamarg and already it has become an instant hit to adventure tourism lovers.
Moreover, drag lift for skiing has also been introduced for skiers. Snow sculptures were also made by the department of tourism for tourists to take selfies so that they can take good memories of ‘The Meadow of Gold’.
Over seven lakhs tourists have visited Sonamarg last year including over 7000 foreign tourists. About 52,000 people have visited Sonamarg for the first time.
Sonamarg literally means ‘ The Meadow of the Gold’, with with a spectacular blue sky and snow clad mountians at an altitude of 2730 metres high.
The pristine landscapes, alpine meadows, awe inspiring mountians have boosted Sonamarg as one of the top destinations in Kashmir in the Global Tourism Map.
The Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department has undertaken measures to make Sonamarg an all weather tourist destination. As part of this intitaive several measures have been undertaken and several events have been organised in the past two months.
The ‘Go Green Sonamarg’ initiative also focusses on sutaianable tourism in the region. First ice skating event was also organised recently.
An Eco Park has been set up jointly by the department of tourism and Sonamarg Development Authority recently, which has also been attracting lot of tourists. The Selfie Point set up to capture the memories is also drawing the visitors.
“The Snow Horse Cart sculpture in Sonamarg stands as a shining example of Kashmir’s artistic ingenuity and cultural richness,” added an official of Kashmir Tourism.
It is situated about 80 kilometres away from the capital Srinagar. Sonamarg had historical significance as a gateway on the ancient Silk Road , connecting Kashmir with the Tibet.
Sonamarg is accessible both by car or by bus from Srinagar.
