In a grand display of the ancient Indian tradition and modern trends, Burnpur Riverside School (BRS) , Burnpur celebrated the opening of CBSE Cluster – II Basketball Tournament, 2022 on December, 2022.
This is the third time that the Burnpur Riverside School was a host to a premier CBSE tournament; the earlier ones being held in 2014 and 2019.
The chief guest for the opening ceremony was Mr. S. Arun Prasad, District Magistrate and District Collector of Paschim Bardhaman.
Other guests and dignitaries who have graced the opening ceremony included , Mr. Rajiv Kumar, Executive Director (MM) of SAIL- ISP, Mr. Gautam Bhatia, Chief General Manager, Incharge, (P &A), SAIL-ISP, Burnpur,Mr. M. E Samshi, Chief General Manager (BE), SAIL-ISP, Burnpur, Mr.S.K Mago, Secretary, Burnpur Riverside School Educational Society & Member, Managing Committee, BRS, Burnpur, Sri K. K Basu, Chairman, Managing Committee, BRS, Chittaranjan & Member, BRSES; Smt. Kuljit Kaur, Principal, Burnpur Riverside School, Chittaranjan & Member, Managing Committee, BRS, Burnpur, Mr. Atin Chowdhury, Member, Managing Committee, BRS, Burnpur and Murli, member , Executive Committee, Asansol Chamber of Commerce.
The Opening ceremony began with the rendition of the School Anthem and a welcome note by the School Choir. The proceedings of the ceremony were initiated with the lighting of the lamp by the Chief Guest, S.Arun Kumar and other dignitaries followed by the hoisting of the CBSE and School flags and a grand march past by the several participating schools.
The Director and Principal of Burnpur Riverside School, Burnpur, Mr. Sushil Kumar Sinha in his welcome address expressed his delight at the fact that CBSE had reposed their trust on the school for a third time. He insisted on the importance of games in daily lives of students and hoped that the stay of all the participating schools and teams will remain as a memorable experience for all.
Shri S. Arun Prasad, Chief Guest of the ceremony in his speech mentioned his delight of having come to BRS, Burnpur and so be a part of the Cluster tournament. He wished great luck to all the participants and expected tough duels between teams for the coveted best positions.
Mr. Rajiv Kumar, ED (MM) of ISP in his address shared the success story fighting against all odds since his childhood of USA
basketball legend Michael Jordan despite being raised in such an economically weaker family to motivate the budding sportsmen and women of the country.
“ If you want to excel in your life or in sports you should give no excuse, no blame, no complaint. Discard all these three words from your life and at the end of the day ‘jo jeeta wahi Sikandar’,”he advised the students.
Mr. Gautam Bhatia, CGM (PA) said that it’s the participation that matters most not the winning or losing and the game should be played in a proper sportsmanship spirit.
The 4-day long tournament was declared open by the chief guest and the first match was played between the girls’ teams of DAV Model School, Durgapur and KIIT International School, Bhubaneswar, with the former winning the game by 25 to 19. A total of 10 matches were played on the first day.
Twenty four schools of CBSE have participated in the tournament , comprising 21 boys’ and 11 girls’ teams from the states of West
Bengal, Odisha and Chattisgarh.
