The Association of Buddhist Tour Operators (ABTO) has provided some suggestions to Sri Lanka Tourism Board as measures for boosting Buddhist Tourism in the country after returning back from a recent FAM Trip. ABTO is the platform for Buddhist Tourism in the world.
Dr. Kaulesh Kumar, Secretary General of Association of Buddhist Tour Operators (ABTO) told The Travel and Tourism Times that the organisation has given its suggestions after experiencing from the recent FAM trip to Sri Lanka to take what kind of measures to boost Buddhist tourism in the country.
“What are the problems we have identified in Buddhist Tourism in Sri Lanka when we visited in FAM TRIP . It May be beneficial for India and Sri Lanka Both Countries?Thanks a lot for giving world class hospitality to our Asian Countries ABTO Team.Really , Sri Lanka is great Historical, Culturally rich, Standard Living of Standard is very high, So Polite People and Natural Beauty land,” he has written in his greetings speech to Sri Lanka Tourism Board after returning back.
ABTO want to focus its view as under :
Buddhist tourism in Sri Lanka faces challenges including a disconnect between the perceived importance of religious tourism and actual tourist behavior, a lack of dedicated marketing and infrastructure, and potential negative impacts on the environment. For India and Sri Lanka, strengthening Buddhist tourism could foster cultural exchange, boost economies, and strengthen diplomatic ties.
Problems with Buddhist Tourism in Sri Lanka:
Mismatch between perception and reality:While Sri Lanka is known for its Buddhist heritage, the proportion of tourists visiting for religious purposes is relatively low.
Insufficient marketing and promotion:There’s a need for targeted marketing strategies to attract tourists specifically interested in Buddhist sites and experiences.
Lack of dedicated infrastructure and services:Developing adequate facilities, transportation, and accommodation options at Buddhist sites is crucial.
Potential environmental impact:Increased tourism can strain natural resources and impact the environment, highlighting the need for sustainable practices.
Deficiencies in language proficiency and trained personnel:Providing language training and qualified guides is essential for a positive visitor experience.
Limited exploration of spiritual tourism potential:There’s a need for a more in-depth assessment of the potential of spiritual tourism and addressing the identified deficiencies.
Travel agencies’ role:Travel agencies need to play a more proactive role in promoting and facilitating Buddhist tourism.
Benefits for India and Sri Lanka:
Cultural exchange and understanding:
Strengthening Buddhist tourism can facilitate cultural exchange programs and promote closer ties between the citizens of both countries.
Economic growth:Increased tourism can boost the economies of both Sri Lanka and India, creating jobs and generating revenue.
Diplomatic ties:Collaborative efforts in promoting Buddhist tourism can strengthen diplomatic relations between the two nations.

“By addressing the identified problems and capitalizing on the potential benefits, Sri Lanka and India can work together to elevate Buddhist tourism and create a mutually beneficial relationship, according to studies of ABTO during the FAM Trip ,” concluded Dr. Kaulesh Kumar.
