The Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park has received a pair of adult Siberian Tigers. The male and female Siberian Tigers have been sent from Paphos Zoo in Cyprus. The big cats reached Kolkata by flight and then were taken to North Bengal by air conditioned animal ambulances and ultimately reached the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park in Darjeeling.
Saurav Chaudhury, member secretary of State Zoo Authority said that the two adult Siberian Tigers from Cyprus zoo have reached the Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park and is safe and fit.
“ Lara and Akamas hopefully will adjust with the environment soon after which we will allow the common people to see them in enclosures,”said Basavraj Holeyachi, Director of Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zooligical Park, darjeeling.
At present they have been kept in the nigh shelter and for the next one month they will be kept under quarantine as per norms.
These two Siberian Tigers have been brought under the animal exchange policy between India and Cyprus. Two red panadas of Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoolical park aged around six years and one and half years have been exchanged with Paphos Zoo of Cyprus.
Incidentally, Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological park is the only zoo in India which is entrusted in breeding and conservation programmeee of red pandas. There are over 25 red pandas in the park.
At present there has been no Siberian Tigers even in Alipore Zoological Park. The last Siberian Tiger died in Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park was in 2007.
Currently there are two Royal Bengal Tigers in the Padmaja naidu Himalayan Zoological Park, Samrat (16 years) and T2 (3 years).
Meanwhile, the Bengal Safari Park in North Bengal will get a pair of lions, the King of The Jungles by the last week of January. A leopard has also been sent to North Bengal from Ramanabagan Mini Zoo in Burdwan.
Introduction of these new wild animals will further attract the wildlife lovers and will boost tourism in Darjeeling and Siliguri in North Bengal in the next few months, experts feel.
