Jammu and Kashmir Cable Car Corporation Managing Director, Ghulam Jeelani Zargar has informed that a fresh survey has been conducted to set up a cable car in tourism hotspot Pahalgam like the famous Gondola in Gulmarg.
The report will be submitted at the board of directors meeting before being submitted it to the government for final approval.
There will be no need to cut trees which will help in getting the clearnce of the project much faster, the official hope.
About seventy percent of the toursists of Kashmir visits Pahalgam. It is also associated with the annual Amarnath Yatra. During July- August it receives thousands of pilgrims.
“ The cable car project in Pahalgam will be above the tree lines and we hope that very soon we will get all the clearances from the stakeholders,”said Gulam Gelani Zargar, who is also the CEO of Tourism Development Authority, Gulmarg.
The aerial length of the cable car project will be less than two kiometres and the topography of Pahalgam is similar to Gulmarg.
In 2022, there has been a tourist footfall of 7.89 lakhs in Pahalgam out of which 2.60 lakhs have been local visistors.
The Gulmarg Gondola, is the highest cable car in Asia and was set up in 1998. The length of which is 2.5 kilometres and the height is 8530 feet high. The Gulmarg Gondola is the biggest tourism attarction in Gulmarg.
The upcoming cable car project is set to give a big boost in tourism further to Pahalgam.
The name Pahalgam is derived from two Kashmiri words- Puheyl (shepherd} and goam (village) over the time became Puheylgoam or Pahalgam. The place acts as a gateway to many meadows and pastures and the traditional Bakharwal communities settle there from spring season to pre-winter, herding their cattle.
According to the Hindus, Pahalgam was originally called Bail Gaon meaning (village of bull NANDI), where Shiva left his bull before entering the Amarnath Cave.
J&K Cable Car Corporation operates the Gulmarg Gondola, Kondori chairlift, and Makhdoom Sahib Ropeway at present.

The nearest airport is Sheikh ul-Alam International Airport in Srinagar, 91 kilometres from Pahalgam.
By Rail-
The nearest railway station is [Bijbehara railway station] 45 km from Pahalgam.
By Road-
Pahalgam is well-connected with roads and highways. The NH 501 passes through Pahalgam alongside other intra-district roads.
