Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) and theĀ Darjeeling and Kalimpong District administration has decided to stop all the adventure tourism activities for the next three months.
This decesion has been taken for the sake of the safety and the security of the tourists. From 16 June to 16 September all sorts of adventure tourism activities have been stopped which includes river rafting, para gliding, camping, hiking, trekking etc.
Since the past three days due to incessant and heavy rainfall in the hills the water levels of Teesta and Rangfu Rivers are constantly rising . There has been reports of landslides in several areas.
Also this timeĀ is the breeding season of the wild aniamsl in the forests.
On Friday and Saturday, the stakeholders of the local tourism sector has been called for a meeting and discussion by GTA, district administartion and police and it was decided that for the next three months adventure tourism activities will be closed.
Mr. Dawa Gyalpo Sherpa, Chief Coordinator of Ā Adventure Tourism at Tourism Department of Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) said that this year the queen of the hills have registerted a record haet in the summer months, but despite that there has been a huge tourist rush.
But now the heavy monsoon season has already started in the hills and adventure tourism will be very much risky.
The adventure tourism mainly takes place in Singalila National Park, Tiger Hill trekking, hiking, kayakingĀ and rafting in the rivers.
Meanwhile,Ā in North Sikkim about 2475 tourists have been strandedĀ due to landslide, ewhich included 60 students of Namchi College. The Sikkim state administration has already opened helpline numbers forĀ informations and ipdates to the tourists.
Darjeeling Adventure Tour and Activities ā Paragliding, white water rafting, trekking, jeep safari to Sandakphu, Jeep Safari to Singalila National Park, Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary, Kayaking, Camping, rafting and camping, rock climbing, motor bike tours,mountain bike tours, hot air baloon, Zorbing ( rolling inside a ball), cliff jumping from Teesta etc.
The second Tourism Working Group meetingĀ of G 20 held at Siliguri has focussed on adventure sports in April this year.
Also a Side Event onĀ āAdventure Tourism as a vehicle for achieving Sustainable Development Goalsā was also organised. Mrs. Gabriella Stowell (Vice President) from Adventure Tour Operators Association (ATTA), G20 Delegates and Padma Shri Awardee Mr. Ajeet Bajaj, President of Adventure Tour Operators Association of India (ATOAI), have been the Ā panelists. A full day event has been organized for domestic industry partners and States of Government of India to deliberate onĀ Tourism in Mission Mode: Advantage Adventure Tourism during the TWG meeting .
