Origin – The Turmeric is found in a tiny village of Lakadong in the foothills of Jaintia Hills in the easternmost part of Meghalaya.
The state of Meghalaya has applied for a Geographical Indication (GI) Tag for Lakadong Turmeric earlier this year.
India is the world’s largest turmeric producer and exporter. There is tremendous demand for Lakadong turmeric in countries like the United Kingdom (UK), United States of America (USA), Russia and The Netherlands.
Speciality – While the curcumin content in Lakadong Turmeric is about 12 percent, compared to about 3 to 5 percent of curcumin content in turmeric produced in other parts of the country and found in all stores and markets.
Just a pinch of Lakadong turmeric powder is enough to transform any delicacy by enhancing its colour, texture and aroma. There is huge demand in the food, pharmaceuticals and cosmetic products industry.
Due to the high percentage of curcumin available in Lakadong Turmeric it has major health benefits for its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties.
It helps to regulate blood pressure, cholesterol, boost immune system, improves skin health, minimises the risks of certain cancers, and also has anti microbial properties.
The rich flavoured and bright coloured product has been exported globally these days. For brands like Zizira already it has become its best selling item.
The Lakadong turmeric price is Rs.2000 per kilogram at Zizira. It is also available in India’s capital city New Delhi at the Connaught Place at ‘The Meghalayan Age’, the state emporium store of Meghalaya and also in online mode.
Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma recently inaugurated the Lakdong Festival in Laskein Block of West Jaintia Hills to celebrate the success story of the truely “ Meghalaya’s Gold Spice’.
