Shravani Mela, one of India’s largest annual religious congregations, is set to commence next month at Baidyanathdham in Deoghar, Jharkhand—home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva. Celebrated during the Hindu month of Shravan (July–August), this month-long spiritual journey draws millions of Kanwariyas from Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, and other parts of the country. Kanwariyas undertake a barefoot journey of over 100 km from Sultanganj, carrying sacred water from the Ganga to offer at the Baba Baidyanath Temple. This year the Shravani Mela will start from 11 July 2025.

To cater to the massive influx of Kanwariyas, Asansol Division of Eastern Railway has initiated extensive preparations across key stations—Jasidih (JSME), Baidyanathdham (BDME), Deoghar (DGHR), and Basukinath (BSKH). The division is working round-the-clock to strengthen infrastructure, enhance passenger amenities, and ensure seamless and safe travel during the Mela period.

A high-level coordination meeting was recently held between higher authorities of Indian Railways and senior officials of the Jharkhand State Government and Deoghar District Administration. In the meeting, it was decided that separate arrangements will be made for the accommodation and logistics of state police personnel who will be deployed for law and order duties during Shravani Mela 2025.

As part of the preparatory measures, special trains will be operated, regular services will be augmented with additional coaches, and facilities at stations are being upgraded to handle the surge. Passenger amenities including drinking water, medical aid booths, help desks, clean restrooms, seating, and waiting areas are being enhanced. Crowd management will be reinforced with deployment of additional staff and RPF personnel for Kanwariya assistance and on-the-spot grievance redressal.

At Basukinath Station, focus is on improving sanitation, drainage systems, road surfacing, and installation of exhaust fans. Damaged glass panels are being replaced, and circulating areas are being refurbished. Waiting rooms are being prepared for GRP, RPF, and commercial staff use. A vinyl-floored pandal with basic amenities will be set up as a dedicated Kanwariya holding area.

At Deoghar Station, a new booking office, waiting rooms, and passenger sheds are being made ready. A separate holding pandal will be set up with drinking water, lights, and seating. Special cleanliness drives are being conducted to ensure hygienic conditions.

At Baidyanathdham Station, fans are being installed in waiting halls and renovation of toilets on platforms and waiting areas is underway.

At Jasidih Station, repair and renovation of the Kanwariya accommodation block is in progress. Bathroom facilities are being upgraded, lighting and water connections are being improved, and separate zones are being earmarked for Kanwariyas, GRP, and RPF. A large Kanwariya holding pandal with all basic facilities is being planned in the circulating area. A new Foot Over Bridge (FOB) is also being expedited to ease Kanwariya movement.
