Tomorrow Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the first phase of expansion of Kempegowda Bangalore International Airport which will be an architectural wonder. About Rs.5000 crores has been invested in phase one of the expansion.
Bengaluru which is now known as the Silicon City of India was earlier known as the Garden City. The T2 is the real tribute to the old Bengaluru city, nicknamed Garden City full of greenery in the newly constructed terminal.
After the inauguration of the first phase of expansion, Terminal 2 will be able to handle 2.5 million passengers and will be able to handle another two million passengers after completion of the second phase of expansion project.
On Friday morning , PM Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Terminal 2 , second runway, multimodal transport hub, expansion of access roads and internal road infrastructures.
Rs.13,000 crores has been pumped in to expand the Kempegowda Bangalore International Airport.
The terminal 2 area will have a space of 2,55,645 square metres and will have 17 security check-in lanes. About 5932 people will be able to sit in the gate lounge seating.
The operators, Bangalore International Airports Limited (BIAL) said that initially the Terminal 2 will be used to cater only the domestic passengers and gradually will add international flight services.
The passengers will soothe in the lush green ambience both within and outside the Terminal 2. At various points calming gardens have been provided in high stress areas.
There are hanging gardens, 10,000 square metres of wall gardens and outdoor gardens.
T2 will provide the passengers a seamless and hassle free air journey. For the shopaholics, the retail experience will be unmatched compared with other airports as it will have all the top international brands.
At the arrival hall , a larger than life video wall has been created to showcase the rich history and culture of Karnataka to the passengers through digital media presentation. Similar technology has been used in various touch points and also in the baggage belt areas.
PM Narendra Modi will also unveil the 108 feet tall bust ( Statue of Prosperity) of Nadaprabhu Kempegowda, the founder of erstwhile Garden city of Bengaluru ant Devanahali and will also flag off the first Vande Bharat Express Train of Indian Railways in South India which will operate in the Chennai- Bengaluru- Mysore route.
The airport will be able to handle 6 crores passengers annually after completion of expansions from 2.5 crores passengers annually at present. Water will be recycled and consumption of power will also be low making it a more ecologically sustainable terminal.
HISTORY
Kempegowda International Airport is an international airport serving Bangalore, the capital of Karnataka in India. Spread over an area of 4,000 acres , it is located about 30 kilometres north of the city near the suburb of Devanahalli. It is owned and operated by Bengaluru International Airport Limited (BIAL), a public–private consortium. The airport opened in May 2008 as an alternative to increased congestion at HAL Airport, the original primary commercial airport serving the city. It is named after Kempe Gowda , the founder of Bangalore. Kempegowda International Airport became Karnataka’s first fully solar powered airport developed by CleanMax Solar.
Kempegowda International Airport is the third-busiest airport by passenger traffic, air traffic movements and domestic and total cargo handled in India, behind the airports in Delhi and Mumbai, and is the 29th busiest airport in Asia. In FY 2021–22, the airport handled around 16.2 million passengers and 411,550 tonnes (453,660 short tonnes) of cargo.
The airport has a single passenger terminal that handles both domestic and international operations, and two runways, the second of which was commissioned on 6 December 2019. A second terminal (Phase-1) will be inaugurated by the PM tomorrow and is likely to be fully operational from December. Also, there is a cargo village and three cargo terminals. The airport serves as a hub for AirAsia India, Alliance Air, Go First, IndiGo, Star Air and DHL Aviation and is a focus city for Air India and SpiceJet. The airport was recognised as the best airport (25 to 40 million passengers per annum) in Asia-Pacific in 2020 by Airports Council International.
