Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), a UNESCO World Heritage Railway, has introduced a new passenger service titled “Jungle Safari” between Siliguri and Gayabari, aimed primarily at promoting local tourism among residents of Siliguri and adjoining areas.

The Jungle Safari service offers an affordable and immersive travel experience on the historic narrow-gauge line, passing through dense forest stretches and scenic landscapes that are otherwise inaccessible by road. The initiative is designed to encourage local communities to experience the heritage railway in a relaxed, leisure-oriented format.

Apart from providing a cost-effective travel option on the UNESCO World Heritage route, the service also enables passengers to enjoy quality leisure time at the iconic Agony Point Loop, a site of historical and engineering significance. The location is expected to become a preferred spot for family outings, group gatherings, and short heritage excursions.

To ensure wider accessibility, the fare has been kept intentionally affordable, with the Siliguri–Gayabari journey priced at just ₹500.
In a significant step towards inclusive growth, DHR has partnered with local Siliguri-based agencies under a Public–Private Partnership (PPP) model. This collaboration is expected to generate new economic opportunities and local employment, while strengthening community participation in heritage tourism.
With the launch of the Jungle Safari service, DHR continues its efforts to blend heritage conservation with sustainable tourism and local economic development, making the historic railway more accessible and relevant to the communities it serves.
