The impact of the Iran–Israel conflict is now being felt in India. Due to continuous attacks and counterattacks between the two countries, fuel prices in the international market have surged. As a result, the price of cooking gas has also increased. Now, the supply of cylinders has suddenly stopped.
CM of Karnataka, Mr. Siddharamaiah have sought intervention of union minister Mr. Hardeep Singh Puri to resolve the crisis.
Because of the war situation, cities like Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Mumbai and New Delhi are facing an acute crisis of uninterrupted of commercial LPG cylinder supply. As a result, the Bengaluru Hotel Owners Association has warned that hotels and restaurants across the city may have to shut down. In Puducherry hotels have shifted to low -fuel recipes.
In Mumbai alone about 20 percent of hotels and restaurants are badly hit.
Incidentally India imports a whopping 62 percent of its total demand of 31.3 million tonnes of LPG requirement annually. Sources said that neighbouring country of Bangladesh has also sought additional supply from India to meet the crisis. India is also exploring alternative channels like Algeria, Norway, Canada and Australia, according to media reports.
Mr. Manpreet Singh, Treasurer of the National Restaurant Association of India (NRAI) said that the impacts of the war in Middle East have been felt by the hotels and restaurant operations in the country, as more the war prolongs, the more pressure on supply of commercial LPG will become.
Mr. Rajiv Mehra, General Secretary of Federation of Association in Indian Tourism and Hospitality ( FAITH) however said that things at the moment at the ground level are still normal and there is no shortage of LPG being witnessed. “One city we hear is Bengaluru- has witnessed some supply issue – that is also a local issue and we understand is being resolved,”he added.
In a statement issued on Monday, the association said that the sudden stoppage of commercial cylinder supply will cause serious problems for many people who depend on hotels. They explained that hotel services are an essential service relied upon daily by ordinary citizens, senior citizens, students, and professionals in the medical field for their meals.
If the supply of commercial cylinders does not resume, hotels and restaurants will be forced to close one by one, which will create difficulties for all these groups of people.
An official from the Bengaluru hotel association stated that fuel supply companies had earlier informed them that they had enough stock to ensure uninterrupted supply for the next 70 days. However, the sudden halt in supply has created serious concerns among hotel owners and others associated with the industry.
Therefore, they have appealed to the central government to resolve the issue quickly. Otherwise, hotel associations have called for a strike starting from March 10.
It is worth noting that due to the Iran–Israel war situation, the Strait of Hormuz—through which a large portion of the world’s oil trade passes—has been closed. As a result, not only India but the entire world is facing a fuel shortage.
The centre has already taken a host of measures to tackle the crisis like increasing the booking interval date from 21 to 25 days, directing the refineries to hike productions of LPG, forming a three member committee comprising of ED rank officers of the oil major’s to review requests of restaurants and hotels, steps have also been taken to stop hoarding.
