Maldivian, the national airline of the Maldives, today marked an important development with the launch of the first-ever direct flight service between Melbourne, Australia and Malé, Maldives, further strengthening connectivity between the two nations and opening a new chapter in bilateral tourism and travel relations.
The inaugural service, operated by Maldivian’s Airbus A330, establishes the first direct air link between Australia and the Maldives, providing travellers with a more convenient and seamless journey between the two destinations. Flights from Malé to Melbourne will operate every Sunday, while flights from Melbourne to Malé will operate every Tuesday.
The arrival was commemorated with a ceremonial water salute at Velana International Airport, alongside a series of welcome activities reflecting Maldivian hospitality. Passengers arriving on the inaugural flight were greeted with commemorative gifts and cultural welcomes marking the occasion.
“This inaugural direct flight between Melbourne and Malé represents a defining moment for Maldivian and for the Maldives’ aviation industry,” said Ibrahim Iyas, Managing Director of Maldivian. “The launch of this service strengthens connectivity between the Maldives and Australia and creates new opportunities for tourism, trade, and bilateral relations between both nations.”
In support of the new route, Visit Maldives Corporation has partnered with Maldivian, which is implementing destination marketing initiatives in the Oceania market. These efforts focus on increasing awareness of the destination, expanding market reach, and highlighting the improved accessibility offered through the new direct connection.
As part of this collaboration, Visit Maldives Corporation has strengthened its engagement in Australia through a partnership with Luxury Escapes Pty Ltd, a travel and lifestyle platform. The partnership supports the promotion of the Maldives and the Melbourne–Malé route, while expanding destination visibility across Australia and New Zealand through consumer, trade, media, and retail marketing initiatives.
Through this partnership, Visit Maldives Corporation and Luxury Escapes will implement destination showcases, travel trade engagement activities, digital and retail campaigns, travel agent training programmes, webinars, and media familiarisation initiatives. The programme will also utilise Luxury Escapes’ reach to promote the Maldives as a long-haul destination and highlight the improved accessibility provided by the new route.
The collaboration will also support destination storytelling through curated content, promotional features, and integrated marketing activities aimed at maintaining interest in the Maldives as a travel destination for Australian travellers.
The launch of the Melbourne–Malé route reflects continued efforts to enhance international connectivity and strengthen the Maldives’ position as a destination in key global markets.
