RAILWAY: DARJEELING HIMALAYAN RAILWAY AND FOREST DEPARTMENT COLLABORATE TO CELEBRATE ‘ARANYA SAPTAHA 2026’ WITH SPECIAL HERITAGE JOY RIDE

In a unique initiative to blend heritage conservation with environmental awareness, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) collaborated with the Directorate of Forests, Darjeeling Division, to celebrate Aranya Saptaha 2026.

As part of the annual forest week celebrations aimed at promoting environmental awareness and biodiversity conservation among the younger generation, a special awareness programme was organized on *15th July 2026*.

Local school students were treated to a special *Joy Ride* on the iconic toy train, traveling from *Darjeeling to Ghum and back*. The initiative successfully showcased the rich heritage of the DHR while instilling crucial conservation values in the students.

School students participated in a dedicated awareness train journey running the picturesque Darjeeling-Ghum-Darjeeling route. Upon reaching India’s highest railway station, Ghum, a vibrant, small cultural event was organized to engage the students and public on ecological protection. The event saw active leadership and participation from key officials, including the Divisional Forest Officer (DFO), the Assistant Divisional Forest Officer (ADFO), and the Station Manager (SM), Darjeeling.

The initiative emphasized that bringing school children close to both nature and heritage is key to fostering a responsible mindset for the future. The collaborative event concluded successfully, leaving a lasting impression on the young ambassadors of conservation.

*Toy Train Day Grand Felicitation Ceremony at Dinabandu Mancha Siliguri*

Following the successful “Toy Train Day” celebrations held on July 4th at Sukna Station, the North Bengal Painters Association, Siliguri, in strategic collaboration with the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR), hosted a grand felicitation ceremony yesterday, July 16th, at the Dinabandhu Mancha in Siliguri. The ceremony was organized to honor the young talents and partners who contributed to the historic heritage-themed art workshop, exhibition, and sit-and-draw competition earlier this month. During the event, official certificates and medals from the DHR were presented to all the young participants of the art workshop and exhibition, with special recognition given to the winners of the sit-and-draw contest.

Shri Tapan Malakar, Station Master of Sukna DHR presented the official DHR certificates and medals to all the young participants, contest winners, and collaborative partners. The collaborative mentors and partners were also honored for their role in using fine arts to connect the younger generation with the region’s rich industrial legacy and biodiversity.
