NEW DELHI | 7 SEPTEMBER 2026

Germany’s inbound tourism sector has defied a volatile global market, posting positive growth for the first six months of 2026.

According to provisional data released by the Federal Statistical Office, international overnight stays in June 2026 rose by 1.6 per cent compared to the same month last year.

The half-yearly figures paint a picture of steady resilience. In total, Germany registered 36.4 million international overnight stays between January and June, marking a 0.5 per cent year-on-year increase.

This uptick in visitor numbers directly boosted the hospitality sector. Data from MKG International reveals that average hotel occupancy climbed by 1.2 percentage points, reaching 65.5 per cent for the first half of the year.

Indian Travelers Fuel Urban Tourism:

India remains a key driver for Germany’s inbound tourism pipeline. Visitor numbers from the subcontinent held firm against the previous year’s strong benchmarks, tracking a marginal increase of 0.1 per cent.

The data highlights a distinct preference among Indian travelers for metropolitan hubs. The country’s ten leading city destinations accounted for roughly 61 per cent of all Indian overnight stays, underscoring the enduring appeal of Germany’s major urban centers.

India continues to be a crucial and highly promising market for tourism in Germany, according to Romit Theophilus, Director of the Marketing & Sales Office for India at the German National Tourist Office (GNTO).

“ Stable visitor numbers in the first five months of 2026 highlight a resilient demand for travel among Indians, even in the face of shifting economic conditions and global uncertainties. Today’s Indian travellers actively look for safe, easily accessible destinations that combine rich cultural experiences with premium hospitality and great value. Germany is perfectly aligned with these needs, offering vibrant cities, deep heritage, scenic landscapes, and a highly efficient public transport system,” noted Mr. Romit Theophilus.

“Germany’s appeal to Indian travelers centers on a young, experience-driven crowd, averaging just 38 years old. With nearly 95% of visitors under the age of 55, this market represents a goldmine for long-term potential. Industry outlooks remain highly optimistic for continued momentum into the second half of 2026, adds Mr. Romit Theophillus .”

Key Highlights:

  • Market Strength: India is a resilient and high-potential source market for German tourism, showing stable growth through May 2026.
  • Travel Preferences: Indian tourists are prioritizing safety, seamless connectivity, cultural authenticity, luxury hospitality, and strong value.
  • Germany’s Appeal: The country perfectly fits these preferences due to its diverse cities, natural landscapes, and efficient public transportation system.

Strong interest in German cities and regions :

German cities and regions are experiencing a massive surge in travel demand from India, driven by a diverse mix of leisure and corporate travelers. Recent tourism data reveals a highly concentrated interest in urban hubs and specific regional destinations, fueled by growing appetites for city breaks, cultural heritage, business travel, shopping, and culinary tourism.

According to the latest figures, Munich led the influx with approximately 150,000 overnight stays. The capital city of Berlin followed closely in second place with 123,000 stays, while the financial hub of Frankfurt secured the third spot with 109,000 stays. Other major urban centers drawing significant traffic include Hamburg, Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, Sindelfingen, Cologne, Nuremberg, and Erlangen.

The travel boom is heavily concentrated within specific geographical clusters. At the regional level, the five leading federal states accounted for a dominant 87 per cent of all Indian overnight stays, underscoring their strong appeal for multi-destination itineraries.

Positive outlook for the second half of 2026:

Germany’s inbound tourism is gearing up for a powerful second half of the year, fueled by surging traveler interest and industry optimism. Recent data from the GNTB Travel Industry Expert Panel reveals that 46% of global travel leaders rate their Germany business positively—marking a stellar 21% increase quarter-on-quarter—with over half expecting continued growth. Further boosting this outlook, the European Travel Commission reports that 81% of Europeans plan to travel between June and November 2026. At the heart of this boom is Germany’s central location, seamless transport links, excellent value, and trusted safety. For Indian globetrotters, the destination is particularly compelling, offering a perfect blend of historic charm, modern cities, scenic nature, and premium experiences, alongside easy travel connections across the rest of Europe.
