There is a particular magic that happens when you swap the jeep for your own two feet in the jungle, and Pugdundee Safaris is bringing back the experience that does exactly that. The Walking & Mobile Safari returns this season, taking a small group of travellers deep into Satpura Tiger Reserve on foot, with nothing between them and the forest but a trail.
This isn’t a safari in the conventional sense; it is five days of genuine adventure. Guests trek through dense forest trails, cross the Denwa river on foot at several points, wander past tribal villages and spend two nights in a beautifully appointed mobile camp pitched exclusively for their group in the buffer zone. Think walk-in tents, hot meals cooked fresh over camp fires, warm hospitality and a sky full of stars with absolutely no Wi-Fi to distract from the experience. A team of seasoned naturalists and a dedicated camp crew travel with the group throughout, so the wilderness feels expansive but never unsafe.
The days settle into an easy, unhurried rhythm. It begins gently, with a relaxed first day at Denwa Backwater Escape and the option of a boat or jeep safari before the real walking begins. The next two days are the heart of the experience — six to seven hours of trekking through forest and along riverbanks each day, broken up with leisurely lunches. Every evening ends at a new camp, with a cold drink waiting. By the fourth day, the pace eases again, with a slow breakfast or an optional bird walk before the trek back to comfort at Denwa Backwater Escape.
Pugdundee Safaris’ Walking & Mobile Safari Experience does call for a reasonable level of fitness as the walks run five to seven hours a day, with some uphill stretches. Guests must also have a spirit of adventure for the more rustic parts of camp life: dry pit toilets, bucket showers, lantern light instead of electricity, and phone signal that comes and goes along the trail rather than at camp ‘In exchange, guests get quiet evenings under open skies, the warmth of a campfire and a kind of stillness that’s increasingly hard to find. As per park policy, guests below the age of 14 are not permitted.
For anyone who has ever wanted to feel the jungle underfoot rather than watch it go by from a vehicle, this is that trip.
