MICE—Meetings, Incentives, Conferences and Exhibitions—has developed into a major component of the way businesses interact with employees, customers, partners and stakeholders. But with the changes in how business events are perceived, just organizing the correct event is not enough anymore.
Nowadays, a MICE program needs to be able to create a meaningful experience, help in achieving business objectives and provide a measurable return on investments.
Here are five reasons to rethink your MICE strategy shared by Louis D’Souza, Managing Partner, Tamarind Global.
- Your Events Are Operationally Successful, But Not Strategically Successful-
An event can run like clockwork (adhering to schedule, offering great food and working registrations and boasting high attendance), yet still not have any meaningful influence on business. If the discussions about your events are mostly focused on operational aspects (location, guest lists, production, timelines), it’s time to reconsider your strategy. Each MICE initiative starts with identifying an objective.
Whether it is about establishing stronger relationships with clients, generating new leads, motivating employees, launching a new product or increasing brand awareness, all the details should serve to accomplish this objective.
- Your Program Is a Repetition Every Year-
While being consistent is important, being repetitive can lead to events becoming too predictable. If your guests know what to expect every single year, your program has probably lost appeal. It is crucial to remember that modern audiences are not looking just for a list of events or a schedule with presentations and networking. What people want today is an unforgettable experience based on workshops, immersions, networking with a twist and engaging activities.
- Assessing Attendance and Failing to Measure Engagement and ROI-
Numerous registrations may seem impressive, but registration figures do not determine the successfulness of an event. Companies must be aware of the fact that the number of attendees does not tell the effect of the event. Metrics might involve participation in different sessions, networking,
creating leads, maintaining meetings with customers, collecting feedback, engagement in social networks, etc.
To evaluate incentive programs, motives of the employees, employee’s achievement, and motivation must be taken into account. The right metrics will depend on the goal of the event held. However, that approach means that you measure the result of the event and not just the number of the participants.
- Sustainability Is Not Considered-
Sustainability can no longer be treated as an additional ‘checkbox’ in the planning of an event. From transportation and the type of food used to decorations and waste handling, MICE programs might have a significant impact on the environment. One of the more efficient ways would be to incorporate sustainability from the very beginning. For example, people may refuse from using single-use materials, opt for local produce, and utilize modern digital communications instead of relying heavily on printed matters. What is more, there is no need to compromise on participants’ experience while sustaining all the sustainable initiatives.
- While your technology is great for logistics, it should also enhance the experience-
Technology has made an impact on event management. Tasks such as online registration, communication via automated channels, application usage, and QR check-ins have undoubtedly improved the logistics of the process. However, we must work towards using our technology for experiences. The next step should be using technology to personalize the experience for customers even more. AI-powered recommendations will help the visitors to find out what sessions and people will be most relevant to them. Moreover, the usage of various platforms will help engage them in the event before, during, and after. Thus, the question is not “What do we need technology for?” but “How can we improve this experience with the help of technology?”
Revamping MICE for Better Results-
The focus of contemporary MICE strategies should go beyond just flawless execution; it should be effective as well and connect business goals with engaging and measurable achievements.
If you notice that your events are becoming more repetitive, it is about time to reconsider the strategy and not just the next event.
