“I am extremely delighted to inform you that the birthplace of Mother Janaki, Punaura Dham, Sitamarhi, has received approval from the cabinet today for a comprehensive development plan, including the construction of a grand temple and other structures. The cabinet has approved a budget of 882 crore 87 lakh rupees for the comprehensive development plan prepared for Punaura Dham. The implementation of this plan will commence soon. I have instructed that its foundation stone be laid by the month of August. We are determined to complete the construction of the grand temple in Punaura Dham, Sitamarhi, at the earliest. Its comprehensive development will be carried out on the lines of Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Tirth Kshetra, Ayodhya. The construction of the grand temple of Mother Janaki in Punaura Dham is a matter of fortune and pride for all the people of the country and especially for all of us in Bihar,” writes Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar in his official X Handle.
The architectural design of the redevelopment has been finalized by the same firm which has designed the Lord Shree Ram Temple in Ayodhya of Uttar Pradesh. The 151 feet architectural marvel crafted by the firm for the temple will be set up inside the sprawling 67 acre campus of Janaki Dham. The Bihar government is also in the process of acquiring the surrounding 50 acres of land very shortly, sources said. Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation (BSTDC) is the nodal agency entrusted for implementation of the project.
Additional Chief Secretary of Government of Bihar, S.Siddharth told the media persons that Rs.137 crores have been earmarked for redevelopment of the old temple and another Rs. 728 crores will be spent on infrastructure and related tourism development, Rs.16 crores allocated for the maintenance job for the next one decade.
Bihar CM, Nitish Kumar has also shared the pictures of the draft architectural designs of the proposed redevelopment projects. The construction work of the project will start soon.
Sources said that the foundation stone of this mega project will be laid in the month of August 2025. The redevelopment project includes a towering statue of Goddess Sita, which will be set up inside the Janaki Dham.
Mr. Raju Kumar Singh, Tourism Minister of Bihar said that the mega redevelopment project of Punaura Dham in Sitamarhi, believed tro to be the birthplace of Goddess Sita will transform the region into a world class spiritual destinations and will not only boost the religious tourism of the region but will also change the socio economic scenario of the area.
Dr. Kaulesh Kumar, Secretary General of Association of Buddhist Tour Operators (ABTO) said that it is great news for the tourism sector and its stakeholders of Bihar and will surely boost the spiritual tourism in the state and in the country once the project is completed.
Meanwhile, in another significant development an MoU was signed in presence of Bihar Tourism Minister , Mr. Raju Singh and tourism secretary, Mr. Lokesh Kumar Singh , Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation, which has set up Rs.7.42 crores Tourism Information Centre at Kanganghat was signed in between Mr. Nand Kishore, Managing Director of BSTDC and Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, Patna Sahib for operation and maintenance of the Tourist Information Centre. It was set up under the Prasad Scheme of the union government.
