AVIATION : INDIGO TO CONNECT DURGAPUR WITH MUMBAI DAILY FROM 1 JULY 2023, JAIPUR FROM OCTOBER

KOLKATA, 22 JUNE 2023:

India’s leading domestic air carrier, Indigo Airlines will commence daily flight services from Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport, Durgapur to Mumbai from 1 July.

“ Indigo Airlines will be launching a new direct flight between Durgapur and Mumbai effective from 1 July 2023. The 6E5313 flight will depart from Mumbai at 7.35 AM and will reach Durgapur at 10.05 AM. The 6E 5314 flight will leave Durgapur at 10.35 AM and will reach Mumbai at 1.10 PM,” confirms Mr. Kailash Mondal, Director of Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in Durgapur.

Indigo presently operates to  Delhi, Bengaluru, all seven days a week and Hyderabad on Sunday, Mondal, Wednesday and Friday ( Four days a week) from Durgapur. Indigo has already completed two years of its flight operations from KNI Airport in April this year.

At present, low cost  airlines, Spicejet operates flights from Durgapur to Chennai and Durgapur to  Mumbai.

From October, the Durgapur – Jaipur maiden flight services of Indigo Airlines are expected to start. Indigo has also planned Durgapur to Patna flight services.

The Andal airport is the first greenfield private sector airport in the country and the first person to fly from the Andal airport was Prime Minister Narendra Modi in 2015.

Chief Minister of West Bengal, Miss Mamata Banerjee  is keen to convert the Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in Andal near Durgapur to an international airport. Due to her interest , the WBIDC has increased its stake in Bengal Aerotropolis Private Limited (BAPL), the operator which runs the Durgapur airport in Andal.

State Chief Secretary Hari Krishna Dwiwedi is the chairman of BAPL. The domestic airport at Andal  can handle 4 lakhs passengers annually and is of 4C category. It also has night landing facilities.

Miss Mamata Banerjee has planned to develop KNI Airport in Durgapur as the second international airport of the state after Netaji Subhas Chandra  Bose International Airport  in Dumdum with direct flight services to neighbouring countries like Nepal, Thailand, Bangladesh
etc.

A separate new cargo terminal building will be set up and the authority of BAPL has sought approval from Airport Authority of India (AAI) and Director General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) for a separate cargo terminal at KNI Airport.

Street lighting system to the approach roads to the airport has been revamped and communication systems by road have improved immensely from both sides of the highways. Bus, Taxi, Toto etc are now available at the airport and SBSTC is running buses from City Centre in Durgapur to KNI Airport in Andal.

JoulePoint, the first EV charging Station has also been inaugurated at the airport last year.
