AVIATION : MEGHALAYA CM CONRAD SANGMA URGES CENTRE TO DECLARE SHILLONG AIRPORT AS AN INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT

The chief minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma has urged the union ministry of civil aviation to declare Shillong Airport as an inyternational airport. Since long time he has been urging the centre to upgrade the Shillong Airport from solely domestic to international airport.

Speaking at the 20 th Annual Conference of Commonwealth  Parliamentary  Association (CPA), Mr. Conrad Sangma has informed that every month 10,000 passengers every month travel from Shillong Airport to Kolkata, New Delhi, Agartala, Imphal, Dimapur, Diburugarh and Guwahati.

“ We are presently upgrading the Shillong Airport with assistance from the central government so that it can accommodate wide bodied aircrafts. As part of the Act East Policy we have also urged the MoCA to declare Shillong as international airport that will further boost the tourism and business  sector of the state,”he added.

He said that the learnings of small countries of Asia and Europe can be adopted  that will significantly uplift the regional economy of the North east   with limited resources while protecting the flora and the fauna.

The Shillong airport is ocated at Umroi, about 30 kilometres from the City Centre. Indigo, Alliance Air and Spicejet are thre three airlines operators at present.
