KOLKATA, 4 AUGUST 2023:
After a hiatus of over three years due to the closure of international flight operations because of the Covid -19 pandemic breakout , the flight services between Kolkata and Colombo is set to resume by the Sri Lankan Airlines as it has planned to reconnect the City of Joy with Sri Lankan capital very soon.
According to Mr. V.Ravindran, Regional Manager ( India and Bangladesh) of SriLankan Airlines Kolkata is a very important market and they are working out a plan to soon resume direct flight services between Kolkata and Colombo.
There have been three direct flights before the Covid -19 pandemic started in March 2020. “We are yet to finalise the dates of resuming our flight operations between Kolkata and Colombo, but definitely will resume in the coming days. We have resumed flight operations in most of the Indian cities,”Mr. V.Ravindran added.
Talking to The Travel and Tourism Times, Mr. Anil Punjabi, Chairman ( East) of Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI) said that Sri Lanka is the best travel and tourism destinations in the SAARC countries.
“ Once the direct flight services between Kolkata and Colombo starts it will surely boost tourism and all travel agents are looking forward for that day,’says Mr. Anil Punjabi.
India continues to be SriLankan Airlines’ top international market, although passenger volume is still substantially low compared to pre-COVID levels. In 2019, the airline carried more than 450,000 passengers from India; in 2022, this figure stood at 130,000. The carrier flies to nine Indian Cities at present.
SriLankan Airlines was the official carrier of the Travel Agents Association of India (TAAI) Convention held at Colombo last month.

It was lights, camera, action when Tamil movie superstar, Rajinikanth, became the latest celebrity to fly SriLankan Airlines. Rajinikanth travelled from Male to Chennai via Colombo on 26 July 2023 and received a red-carpet welcome from the Sri Lankan Airlines’ team that made sure the star’s onboard experience was movie-star worthy.
