The four-day Amarkantak Waterfall Mountain Trek is currently underway from February 28 to March 3, 2026, marking a significant push towards strengthening adventure tourism in the region. The initiative is being organised by the District Administration, Anuppur, in collaboration with the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board and noted trekking organisation Indiahikes.
Amarkantak, revered as the origin of the Narmada, has long been a centre of spiritual tourism. The ongoing trek reflects a calibrated effort to complement its religious significance with structured nature-based and adventure experiences, as tourist arrivals to the region continue to rise.

Beginning from Jabalpur, the trek is covering key natural sites including Johila Dam, Padauna Waterfall, Shambhu Sarovar and Damgarh — a vantage point marking the meeting of the Vindhya and Satpura ranges. Participants are traversing forested stretches and water bodies along a route that features four rivers, four waterfalls and four natural ponds, offering an immersive experience of the region’s biodiversity and landscape diversity.
Dr. Ilayaraja T., Secretary, Government of Madhya Pradesh, Tourism Department and Managing Director, Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, said the initiative adds a new dimension to spiritual destinations in the State.
> “Adventure tourism initiatives such as the Amarkantak Waterfall Trek are expanding the appeal of our spiritual centres. The effort strengthens Amarkantak’s positioning as a destination that integrates faith, nature and responsible tourism.”
Anuppur Collector Shri Harshal Pancholi noted that such events are contributing to local livelihood generation.
“The initiative is enhancing tourist footfall while creating employment avenues for local youth through guiding services, homestays and transport support,” he said.
The trek is being conducted under Indiahikes’ ‘Green Trails’ framework, with a strict zero-waste protocol to minimise ecological impact.
