On the grand occasion of Rajasthan Day 2026, a special exhibition titled “Ancient Coins and Currency of Rajasthan” has been inaugurated at the historic Hawa Mahal monument in the Pink City. Organized by the Department of Archaeology and Museums, this three-day event (March 17 to 19, 2026) brings Rajasthan’s centuries-old glorious history to life through its coinage. Rare coins from different eras have become a major attraction for tourists and enthusiasts.
This significant exhibition presents a chronological journey of history—from the earliest punch-marked coins to modern-era currency. The extensive collection includes Indo-Greek coins, cast coins, coins of the Yaudheya republic, tribal coins, Kushan and post-Kushan period artifacts, Western Kshatrapa coins, and symbols of the golden age of the Gupta period. Additionally, Indo-Sasanian, Gadhaiya, Adivaraha, and distinctive horseman-and-river style coins shed light on the art and economy of their respective times.
Offering a glimpse into medieval and princely state history, the exhibition also features coins from the reigns of Ajaydev Chauhan, Somaladevi, the Kalachuri dynasty, as well as the Delhi Sultanate, Mughal, post-Mughal, Jaunpur Sultanate, and Gujarat Sultanate periods. Representing the transitional phase of modern history, coins from the East India Company and the British era are displayed alongside the famous “Jhadshahi” coins of the Jaipur state, as well as a remarkable collection of historical medals, tokens, and ceremonial coins. Special coins from princely states like Bundi and Bikaner are also on display.
This exhibition is not only fascinating for general tourists but also highly valuable for numismatics researchers seeking historical insights. Set within the walls of Hawa Mahal, the exhibition highlights the rich cultural and commercial heritage of Rajasthan, revealing aspects of history that had gradually faded over time.
