LUCKNOW | 26 JULY 2025

Under the pilgrimage development initiative of the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, the sacred land of Chitrakoot will soon offer a more majestic and spiritually immersive welcome to devotees. Three grand entry gates inspired by themes of devotion (bhakti) are being constructed at major entry points to Chitrakoot, namely, the Prayagraj-Chitrakoot, Banda-Chitrakoot, and Kaushambi-Chitrakoot roads. A total budget of Rs 5 crores has been sanctioned for this project.

This announcement was made by Shri Jaiveer Singh, Minister of Tourism and Culture, Government of Uttar Pradesh. He stated that Chitrakoot holds deep spiritual significance as it was Lord Ram’s ‘tapobhumi’ during his exile period. Lord Ram, along with Mata Sita and Lakshman, spent eleven and a half years in this divine region. The bhakti-themed entry gates aim not only to elevate the pilgrimage experience but also to enhance infrastructure along the sacred Ram Van Gaman Path.

Minister Jaiveer Singh further highlighted that the tourism department is committed to preserving the spiritual essence of Chitrakoot while simultaneously fostering its development. The gateway structures will incorporate depictions of Lord Ram, Mata Sita, and Lakshman, along with sacred symbols, traditional art, and elements of local cultural heritage. Each gate is being thoughtfully designed in harmony with the region’s architectural identity and religious significance so that pilgrims can begin to feel the sanctity of Chitrakoot even as they approach the town.

Singh also noted that Uttar Pradesh continues to lead in domestic tourism, with a record footfall of 65 crore tourists in 2024 alone, a reflection of the state’s rich spiritual, cultural, and religious legacy. Chitrakoot has always played a vital role among the state’s major religious destinations. It is not only an important stop on the Ram Van Gaman Path but also part of the Prayagraj-Chitrakoot route. Chitrakoot’s nearness to Ayodhya, Prayagraj, and Varanasi, that form UP’s spiritual triangle, acts an added advantage for tourists and helps increase their stay in the state.

Among the key religious sites in Chitrakoot is the revered Kamadgiri Hill, considered the spiritual nucleus of the town. Devotees perform circumambulation (parikrama) around the hill to seek divine blessings. Other notable pilgrimage spots include Gupt Godavari, Hanuman Dhara, Sati Anusuya Ashram, and Janaki Kund, each contributing to the town’s deep spiritual fabric.

The construction of these devotional entry gates is set to enrich the pilgrim journey, strengthen religious tourism, and reaffirm Chitrakoot’s place as one of the most sacred destinations on the Ram Van Gaman trail.
