(Mobile App to Provide History, and Religious Significance of Each Ghat in Kashi – Jaiveer Singh)
LUCKNOW | 14 JULY 2025
In a bid to enhance the experience of visitors to Varanasi, the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department is launching a pioneering digital initiative. Under this plan, a GPS-enabled audiobook is being developed for the city’s iconic 84 ghats, offering tourists a rich, immersive experience with easy access to historical, spiritual, and religious information.
Sharing the details, Uttar Pradesh Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said that the department is working to present Kashi’s spiritual and cultural sites in a digital format. Through this GPS-integrated audiobook, tourists will be able to listen to the stories of each ghat’s historical, and religious, relevance, while walking along the riverfront, taking a boat ride on the Ganga, or even exploring remotely. Information will be available in Hindi, English and various other Indian languages, making the experience accessible to a wider audience.
The Minister informed that this audiobook will be integrated into the existing Uttar Pradesh Tourism mobile application. Users will not need to scan QR codes or download a separate app. Whether walking across the ghats, cruising the Ganga, or experiencing the city virtually, users can access the content via GPS or manual selection. Importantly, the feature will also be available in offline mode, ensuring access even in areas with low connectivity, benefiting pilgrims, tourists, boat travelers, and remote listeners alike.
Each ghat will be presented as an individual chapter in the audiobook, complete with title visuals, thematic background music, and text-based content to aid the hearing-impaired. Professional voice artists and narrators will bring these stories to life. The digital audiobook will also feature a specially designed cover page carrying the official Uttar Pradesh Tourism logo.
Minister Jaiveer Singh further said, “The 84 ghats of Varanasi are not just religious landmarks, they represent the essence of our rich spiritual and cultural heritage. With this GPS-enabled audiobook, we are transforming this wealth of knowledge into an experience that transcends barriers of language and location. Whether one is walking by the Ganga, riding a boat, or listening from afar, this initiative will deepen the connection to Kashi’s ancient legacy.”
