KOLKATA, 23 JUNE 2023:
We are all curious about ChatGPT, but few of us have explored how to use this tool.
Whilst we were toying with the idea of a web series on crime detection, we at Robeen’s Media Shop, thought of using ChatGPT to create models of narrative.
To recap, let me tell you how we went about it.
First, we created the characters.
Second, we envisaged a location.
Third, we devised a simple plot structure.
Fourth, we deployed the ChatGPT to create the narratives.
Background and Characters:
Mr P K Bose, aged 72, Retired Tea Garden Manager wants to know who killed
his dog.
Mr Sen, aged 65, is an advocate, and wants to solve the mystery.
Mrs Sikha Bose, aged 66, wife of Mr Pk Bose. She is Diabetic, and suffers
from Dementia
Mr Protul Sinha, aged 69 is a retired Professor of Psychology. Obsessed with
psycho analysing each and every person.
Pepsi, age 17, servant to the family, hyper-energetic, ready to serve. Loved
his master’s dog.
Starting Line: It was almost dark when the taxi arrived at the gate of the resort. Mr Sen ,the high court lawyer, embarked from the taxi and walked towards the reception room of the resort, The Sundowner.
We provided ChatGPT with the character sketches and starting line that I have cited above, and instructed it to create the narratives.
Here are the results!
This is the third narrative created by ChatGPT, and is created in a casual style of writing.
Narrative 3
It was almost dark when the taxi arrived at the gate of the resort. Mr Sen ,the high court lawyer, embarked from the taxi and walked towards the reception room of the resort, The Sundowner. He was here to meet his old friend, Mr P K Bose, who had called him in a state of panic. Mr Bose had told him that his beloved dog, Bruno, had been found dead in the garden, with a bullet wound in his chest. Mr Sen was shocked and saddened by the news, but he also felt a surge of curiosity. Who would want to kill a harmless dog? And why?
He entered the reception room and saw Mr Bose sitting on a sofa, looking pale and distraught. Next to him was his wife, Mrs Sikha Bose, who was clutching a handkerchief and sobbing softly. On the other side of the room, he noticed a tall and thin man with a beard and glasses, who was reading a book. He recognized him as Mr Protul Sinha, another friend from their college days. He also saw a young boy in a uniform, who was carrying a tray of tea and biscuits. He guessed that he was Pepsi, the servant of the Bose family.
Mr Sen greeted them all and expressed his condolences to Mr Bose. He asked him if he had any idea who could have done such a cruel thing. Mr Bose shook his head and said that he was clueless. He said that Bruno was a friendly and loyal dog, who never harmed anyone. He said that he had found him lying on the grass, bleeding profusely, when he had gone out for a walk after dinner. He said that he had heard a gunshot, but he had thought it was from the nearby forest. He said that he had called the police, but they had not arrived yet.
Mr Sen nodded and said that he would try to help him find the culprit. He asked him if he had any enemies or rivals who might have a grudge against him or his dog. Mr Bose said that he did not have any enemies, as far as he knew. He said that he had retired from his job as a tea garden manager five years ago, and since then he had been living peacefully in this resort with his wife and dog. He said that he did not have any conflicts or disputes with anyone in the resort or outside.
Mr Sen looked at Mr Sinha and asked him if he had any insights into the case. Mr Sinha closed his book and smiled. He said that he was fascinated by the mystery and that he had been trying to psychoanalyse the possible motives and personalities of the killer. He said that he had some theories, but he needed more evidence to confirm them. He said that he would share them with Mr Sen later.
Mr Sen thanked him and turned to Mrs Bose. He asked her how she was feeling and if she had seen anything suspicious. Mrs Bose looked at him with a blank expression and said that she did not know what he was talking about. She said that she did not remember anything about a dog or a murder. She said that she only wanted to go home and sleep.
Mr Sen felt sorry for her and realised that she was suffering from dementia. He wondered if her condition had anything to do with the case.
He decided to talk to Pepsi next. He asked him if he had noticed anyone or anything unusual in the resort or in the garden. Pepsi nodded eagerly and said that he had seen a man in a black coat and hat running away from the garden after the gunshot. He said that he had followed him for a while, but he had lost him in the dark.
Mr Sen was intrigued by this information and asked Pepsi if he could describe the man in more detail. Pepsi said that he could not see his face clearly, but he remembered that he had a scar on his left cheek and a limp in his right leg.
Mr Sen thanked Pepsi for his help and asked him to bring him some more tea. He then sat down on another sofa and started to think about the case. He wondered who the man in black was and what his connection to Bruno was. He wondered if there were any clues or evidence in the garden or in Bruno’s body. He wondered if there were any witnesses or suspects among the other guests or staff of the resort.
He decided to investigate further and find out more about the mystery of Bruno’s death.
