In a major move forward towards expanding regional connectivity and socio – economic development, the state Government of Bihar has inked a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Airports Authority of India (AAI) at New Delhi today for setting up of six new regional airports across the state.
The MoU was signed at Bihar Niwas in New Delhi in the presence of Chief Secretary of Bihar, Mr Amrit Lal Meena and Resident Commissioner of Bihar, Mr. Kundan Kumar.
The total investment cost in setting up this six regional airports will be Rs.150 crores.
The six new regional and domestic airports will be set up at Madhubani, Birpur (Supaul), Munger, Valmikinagar (West Champaran), Muzaffarpur, and Saharsa. The state government has allocated Rs 150 crore for the first phase, including Rs.25 crores earmarked per each of this six regional airports.
Sources said that all these six regional airports have been planned to support 19-seater smaller aircrafts, aimed at connecting remote regions and stimulating local development.
“ Our initiative is aligned with Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s ‘Viksit Bharat by 2047’ vision and the UDAN (Ude Desh ka Aam Nagrik) scheme, launched many years ago to promotes affordable air travel to underserved areas,”the officials stated.
It will be a huge Boost to state Tourism and will create local employment opportunities and improve the socio economic scenario and logistics.
Dr. Kaulesh Kumar, Secretary General of Association of Buddhist Tour Operators (ABTO), has welcomed this move by the Bihar government and said that it will surely boost the tourism sector in the state.
The new regional airports are expected to boost tourism in culturally and ecologically rich regions like Valmikinagar and Madhubani.
The Narendra Modi led union government is planning to develop about 50 new airports over the next five years, it seems that the state of Bihar is already emerging as a priority state in India’s regional aviation push.
