New Town, the cycle friendly city, the green city now boosts the country’s first solar dome. The 27 feet tall solar dome has been opened for public viewing.

It is situated  near the herbal garden of the famous Eco Park in New Town. The Solar Dome has been set up on 2.89 acres of land with a height of 55 metres and diameter of 46 metres and has over 2000 solar panels.

180 KW of green power will be produced from the panels set up on the body of the Solar Dome. All the electrical gadgets and street lights will be powered by the solar power manufactured by this Solar Dome. From outside it looks  majestic and like a glass house.

All tourists visiting Eco Park will get to see this Solar Dome and can visit it without any cost. The Housing and Infrastructure Development Corporation (HIDCO) and West Bengal State Electricity Distribution Company Limited (WBSEDCL) have jointly set up this project with technology from  Switzerland.

About Rs.30 crores have been spent to set up this solar dome. There is huge space inside the dome with several floors for exhibitions and other purposes. The top floor will have a viewing gallery.

Work of the Solar Dome project started in February 2017. There will be fixed cycles on one floor and paddling will create electricity. The green power will also be utilised to illuminate the adjoining area street lights.

Hidco has taken a leading role in reducing the carbon footprints in New Town area and has developed exclusive green cycle bays and now has set up a renewable solar powered dome which is not only an architectural marvel for the visitors of New Town and Eco Park but will also become a model  in reducing global warming in the region.

The Solar Dome of New town is all set to become a milestone of renewable energy in the country. According to the Paris Agreement Goals, greenhouse gas  emissions should be reduced to 45 percent by 2030 and net zero by 2050 by moving towards non-fossil fuels for green energy to control global warming.
