KOLKATA, 7 JUNE 2023:
A regional private airline operating a flight between Kolkata and Cooch Behar for the past few months has announced that it will now operate flight services on all days of the week starting from June 4.
In February, IndiaOne Air, an Ahmedabad-based private airline, introduced a nine-seater aircraft on the Cooch Behar-Kolkata route. Initially, the service was available five days a week, from Monday to Friday. From April, the service was extended to include Saturdays.
With a steady flow of passengers, the airline has now decided to operate the flight service seven days a week, including Sundays. Mr. Pawan Kadyan, district magistrate of Cooch Behar said that this expansion of service is seen as a positive development especially for Cooch Behar.
The flight between Cooch Behar and Kolkata takes approximately one hour and fifty minutes, and the fare is around Rs 4,000. The decision to extend the flight service to all days of the week has been welcomed by the residents of Cooch Behar, who believe that if the demand remains consistent, more regional airlines might consider starting services to the region.
“Previously, some private airlines had discontinued services from Cooch Behar due to a lack of passengers. When this flight was introduced, we were unsure whether it would continue,” said Mr. Dipankar Chakraborty, a state government employee from Mathabhanga in Cooch Behar.
Residents also expressed their desire for a similar flight service to be introduced between Cooch Behar and Guwahati. Located on the Bengal-Assam border, Cooch Behar has trade links with Assam.
Cooch Behar is the district headquarter and the largest town in the district. The Torsa River flows by the western side of the town. It is a famous tourist Centre and has been declared a heritage town. Prominent industries in the district are agro-based and jute industries.
