Development and promotion of tourism destinations and products is primarily undertaken by the concerned State Government (SG)/Union Territory Administration (UTA). A meeting on Union Budget Announcement 2024-25 regarding development of key pilgrimage sites in Bihar was held with the State Government of Bihar in July, 2025 during which SG of Bihar was requested to submit Destination Strategy and Development Plan for Nalanda.
The Ministry of Tourism through its central sector schemes of ‘Swadesh Darshan (SD) and Swadesh Darshan 2.0 (SD2.0)’, ‘Challenge Based Destination Development (CBDD)’, a sub-scheme of Swadesh Darshan scheme and ‘Pilgrimage Rejuvenation and Spiritual Heritage Augmentation Drive (PRASHAD)’ complements the efforts of tourism infrastructure development in the country by extending financial assistance to the SGs/UTAs in synergy with the scheme guidelines, receipt of the project proposals from the concerned State Governments/Union Territory Administrations, availability of funds etc.
Further, Government of India under its ‘Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI) – Development of Iconic Tourist Centres to Global Scale’ sanctioned 40 projects in 23 States for Rs.3295.76 Crore in the country including Bihar in Financial Year 2024-25, with the primary objective to comprehensively develop iconic tourist centres in the country, branding and marketing them at global scale.
This information was given by Union Minister for Tourism and Culture ,Mr. Gajendra Singh Shekhawat in a written reply in Lok Sabha today.
Tourism Promotion Through Netflix:
The Ministry of Tourism entered into a non-commercial Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Netflix Entertainment Services India LLP with aim to promote Indian tourism destinations globally through cinematic storytelling.
MoU with Netflix includes promotion of natural landscape, cultural and heritage sites of the country including the State of Gujarat.
