The project, undertaken by the Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department, aims not only to conserve this significant religious site but also to strengthen its presence on the tourism map. As part of the restoration efforts, structural repairs, beautification, and enhancements to pilgrim facilities were carried out.
Addressing the gathering, Member of Parliament from Lucknow and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated that this initiative reflects the preservation of our heritage, culture, and values. Deputy Chief Minister Brajesh Pathak also addressed the event. More than ₹1.88 crore was allocated by the state tourism department for the temple’s restoration and infrastructure development, with various works executed by Uttar Pradesh State Tourism Development Corporation Ltd.
Located in Lucknow’s Chowk ward, Badi Kali Ji Temple is a significant religious site with deep cultural and spiritual value. The temple draws large crowds during Navratri, when devotees throng to offer prayers to Goddess Kali. The temple is believed to have been established over 2,400 years ago by Adi Guru Shankaracharya.
According to tradition, the Goddess is worshipped with water collected from a sacred kund within the temple. Devotees believe that bathing with this holy water brings relief from ailments. This faith draws thousands of pilgrims to the temple every year during Navratri. Over one lakh visitors and devotees visit the shrine annually. The Tourism Department has introduced special arrangements to improve facilities for pilgrims, enhancing both their spiritual and touristic experiences.
Extensive development work has been undertaken at the project site by the Tourism Department to improve the visitor experience. Key developments include the construction of a parking facility, a passenger hall, restrooms, installation of a lift in the passenger hall, and five rooms equipped with washrooms. These improvements have resulted in an estimated 15% increase in footfall, demonstrating how quality infrastructure can attract more tourists.
Speaking on the occasion, Tourism and Culture Minister Jaiveer Singh said, “The renovation of the historic Badi Kali Ji Temple in Lucknow’s Chowk area is an attestation of our government’s commitment to preserving cultural heritage. This temple is not merely a place of worship, it is a symbol of faith, tradition, and our rich historical legacy. The structural improvements, beautification, and infrastructural upgrades by the tourism department will ensure a better experience for both devotees and tourists.”
The event also witnessed the presence of Deputy Chief Minister Mr. Brajesh Pathak, local MLAs, Mayor Smt. Sushma Kharkwal, saints and seers, temple authorities, and a large number of devotees.
