Bareilly district in Uttar Pradesh is also known as the ‘City of Temples’. Home to centuries-old temples and sacred sites, it continues to attract a large number of visitors. The Uttar Pradesh Tourism Department has planned to develop the lesser-known tourist spots and ancient temples of the district. The objective is not only to preserve the region’s rich religious and cultural heritage but also to promote local tourism. In this context, projects worth Rs. 9 crore have been approved for the development of basic infrastructure, beautification, and enhancement of tourist facilities at key religious sites such as Bada Bagh Hanuman Mandir, Shri Sita Ram Mandir, Anand Ashram Temple, among others. Preparations are already underway to implement these projects on the ground.
This information was shared by Uttar Pradesh Minister of Tourism and Culture, Jaiveer Singh. He stated, “Through these projects, the Tourism Department will provide improved facilities for devotees. Bareilly is home to several ancient temples that attract large crowds. The projects will include beautification of temple premises, improved road connectivity, lighting, drinking water, and other basic amenities.”
Religious tourism in Bareilly is being actively expanded. The renowned Anand Ashram Temple located in the Cantonment area will soon witness the start of tourism development works. A fund of Rs. 1 crore has been sanctioned for this project, which will strengthen the infrastructure within the temple complex. This includes seating arrangements for devotees, lighting, construction of pathways, toilets, and other beautification works.
Similarly, the Bada Bagh Hanuman Temple in Bareilly city will also undergo tourism development at a cost of Rs. 3 crore. Deeply revered by devotees, the temple sees heavy footfall every Tuesday and Saturday. It is widely believed that Lord Hanuman himself visits this temple. Esteemed saints like Neem Karoli Maharaj have also visited this site. In light of its spiritual significance, development works will include beautification of the premises, water and sanitation facilities, lighting, construction of approach roads, and seating arrangements.
The historic Shri Sita Ram Temple, approximately 300 years old, will also be developed with a fund of ₹3 crore. The temple enshrines idols of Lord Ram, Goddess Sita, Jagannath, Hanuman, and Lord Shiva, and is popularly known as “Shri Sita Ram ka Jharokha”. Every year, special rituals and celebrations are held here on the occasion of Ram Navami. The development aims to improve facilities for pilgrims and promote tourism in the area.
Trivati Nath Temple in Prem Nagar, another significant religious site in the district, is dedicated to Lord Shiva. It is believed that Lord Shiva manifested himself here. Local legends associated with the temple involve a cowherd and three sacred banyan trees. Rs. 2 crore will be spent on facade lighting, enhancing the temple’s grandeur and spiritual appeal.
Minister Jaiveer Singh said, “Through these projects associated with the religious sites of Bareilly, we aim to ensure comprehensive beautification, improved connectivity, lighting, water supply, sanitation, and seating arrangements for pilgrims. Our goal is to offer spiritual peace along with better facilities and a clean environment. The Tourism Department is working with utmost seriousness to bring these initiatives to fruition at the earliest.”
