The historic town of Orchha in Madhya Pradesh is set to gain a prominent position on the global tourism map. The Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, has approved an additional INR 25 crore under the Swadesh Darshan 2.0 scheme to enhance tourism infrastructure and facilities in Orchha. This follows a previous allocation of INR 99.92 crore in December 2024 for heritage conservation and the development of museums in the region.

Orchha has been recommended by the Government of India for UNESCO World Heritage recognition under the 2027–28 cycle. It has also been selected under UNESCO’s Historic Urban Landscape (HUL) initiative, further solidifying its international cultural standing.

Principal Secretary, Tourism, Culture, and Religious Trusts & Endowments Department, and Managing Director, Madhya Pradesh Tourism Board, Mr. Sheo Shekhar Shukla stated that the Ministry of Tourism has launched the “Swadesh Darshan 2.0” sub-scheme under its Challenge-Based Destination Development initiative, aimed at developing tourism destinations across the country. Under this scheme, 50 destinations (with a maximum of five per state) will be selected for focused development. Orchha has been chosen under the category of Spiritual Destinations.

As part of the initiative, international-standard tourism infrastructure will be developed in Orchha, along with beautification of the town, conservation of its historic heritage, and preservation of local art and culture. These efforts are expected to significantly boost the number of domestic and international tourists visiting Orchha, while also generating economic benefits for the local community.

Under the new allocation, a comprehensive range of tourism infrastructure projects will be undertaken in Orchha:

Tourism Interpretation Centre :

Located near the Topchi ki Haveli, the upcoming Experience Centre will feature a 3D model of Orchha, interactive panels chronicling its historical evolution, a booking kiosk, a children’s play area, and a café to enhance visitor experience.

Hunarshala (Skill Pavilion):

Local artisans will receive specialized training to craft premium-quality souvenirs. The Hunarshala will allow tourists to witness live craftsmanship, participate in workshops, and purchase locally made items. The facility will also include an open-air amphitheatre, modern parking amenities, and entry plazas equipped with e-charging stations and QR-based ticketing systems.

Tourism Pathways Development :

Tourism routes will be upgraded with aesthetic enhancements such as preservation of existing pathways, new pavements, arches, ornamental balconies, street furniture, signage, and lighting. Dedicated performance spaces along the routes will allow local artists to showcase cultural traditions.

Modern Amenities and Smart Mobility :

Tourist mobility will be improved with a hop-on hop-off bus service. A dedicated website will be launched to promote Orchha’s historical and cultural significance. Additional features include audio guide systems for monuments and a feedback mechanism for continuous improvement.

The earlier sanctioned amount of INR 99.92 crore under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment Scheme 2024–25 will support the following key initiatives in Orchha:

* Urban infrastructure improvement in Orchha

* Restoration of historic gateways and bridges

* Road development connecting museums to city arteries

* Development of e-cart parking, charging stations, and signage

* Route enhancement connecting various monuments

* Projection mapping and live performances by local artists

* Development of QR-based guided walk apps

* Integrated street and heritage lighting

* Conservation of temples and structures within fort complexes

* Construction of modern restrooms and development of the fairgrounds

* Establishment of organized shopping zones

A New Era for Orchha:

These integrated efforts are poised to elevate Orchha’s stature as a world-class spiritual and cultural destination. The comprehensive development not only strengthens its heritage appeal but also aims to boost the local economy by generating employment and fostering community engagement. With the implementation of these projects, Orchha is expected to herald a new era in tourism, showcasing the rich legacy of Madhya Pradesh to a global audience.
