Punauradham, located in Sitamarhi district, holds immense mythological and historical significance. As described in the epic Ramayana, Punauradham is the birthplace of Mata Sita, the consort of Lord Shri Ram and the daughter of King Janak. Being the birthplace of Mata Sita, it is regarded as a supremely sacred pilgrimage site for Hindus and followers of Sanatan Dharma. Following the construction of the newly built grand temple of Lord Shri Ram in Ayodhya, the Government of Bihar has also planned the construction of a grand temple at Punauradham on similar lines.

The Tourism Department has initiated the process of developing the Maa Janaki Janmabhoomi Punauradham temple complex in Sitamarhi as part of its overall development plan. After completion of the tender process by the Bihar State Tourism Development Corporation, the work order was issued on Monday to the selected bidder, Ahluwalia Contracts.

The major components of this large-scale project include the upgradation of the existing temple structure, other tourism-related development works, and construction of additional buildings. After completion, operation and management-related works will also be carried out for a period of 10 years. The total estimated cost of this project is ₹942.383 crore. The stipulated time for completion of the work by the contractor has been set at 42 months.

Under this comprehensive project, construction of a circumambulatory path (parikrama path), boundary wall (parikota), ritual pavilion (anushthan mandap) around the main temple, and beautification of Maa Janaki Kund will be undertaken. Facilities for accommodation of tourists (pilgrims), along with a museum and an auditorium, will also be developed. It is noteworthy that the government has already approved an amount of ₹165.57 crore for the acquisition of 50 acres of land. At present, 17 acres of land are already available for the Punauradham temple. The height of the main temple to be constructed within this complex will be 151 feet.
