When Late PM Smt. Indira Gandhi has launched the nation’s first Project Tiger about 50 years ago on 1 April in Bandipur Tiger Reserve in Karnataka the number of big feline count was merely a dozen.
But today, Bandipur Tiger Reserve with about 126 residential big cats scripts a sucess story of not only Project Tiger but also became a poster boy of the country’s Tiger Conservation Project along with playing a major role of India hosting the largest number of tigers in the world today.
At around 7.15 AM tomorrow, PM Narendra Modi will visit the Bandipur Tiger Reserve and will also meet the field directors. He will also release postage stams. At around 11 AM, PM will release the latest Tiger Census data of India.
The PM will also launch the International Big Cat Alliance (IBCA) which will focus on protection and conservation of seven major big cats of the world — Tiger, Lion, Leopard, Snow Leopard, Puma, Jaguar and Cheetah, with membership of the range countries harbouring these species.
Later in the day the PM will also visit the Theppakadu Elephant camp in adjacent Mudumalai Tiger Reserve in neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu bordering Chamarajanagar district and interact with mahouts and ‘kavadis’ of the elephant camp.
Due to the scheduled visit of the PM Narendra Modi, the district administration has banned tourists visiting the Bandipur Tiger Reserve from April 6 to April 9. Ibesides, the district administration also closed the vehicular movement on the National Highway 181 and vehicles passing through this road have been diverted in view of the VVIP visit.
The Mysore – Ooty Highway which bifurcates the Bandipur Tiger Reserve remains closed from 9 PM to 6 AM to save the wild aniamls. November to February is the best time to visit the forest.

Bandipur National Park is a national park covering 868.63 km2 (335.38 sq mi) in Chamarajnagar district in the Indian state of Karnataka. It was established as a tiger reserve under Project Tiger in 1973. It is part of India’s first biosphere reserve , the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve since 1986.
The Maharaja of the Kingdom of Mysore created a sanctuary of 90 square kilometres in 1931 and named it the Venugopala Wildlife Park. The Bandipur Tiger Reserve was established under Project Tiger in 1973 by adding nearly 800 square kilometres to the Venugopala Wildlife park.
