Under the able guidance of Hon’ble Prime Minister, Narendra Modi, our country is passing through the Amrit Kaal and in a historic move to enhance the commuter experience, Prime Minister Narendra Modi have launched the Amrit Bharat station improvement scheme for redevelopment of 508 Railway station on 6th August, 2023 across the length and breadth of the country. Amrit Bharat Station scheme envisages development of stations on a continuous basis with a long-term approach. It involves preparation of Master Plans and their implementation in phases to improve the amenities at the stations like improvement of station access, circulating areas, waiting halls, toilets, lift/escalators as necessary, cleanliness, free Wi-Fi, kiosks for local products through schemes like ‘One Station One Product’, better passenger information systems, Executive Lounges, nominated spaces for business meetings, landscaping etc. keeping in view the necessity at each station.
Among these 508 station, Barrackpore station is also proposed to get a facelift under Amrit Bharat station. Barrackpore is a railway station in North 24 Parganas district in the Indian state of West Bengal, which serves the city of Barrackpore. It lies on the Sealdah–Ranaghat line and is part of the Kolkata Suburban Railway system and is under the jurisdiction of Eastern Railway. Barrackpore is amongst the most prominent sightseeing destination in the North 24 Parganas of West Bengal and has seen significant phases of Indian history. There are many places of historical significance in Barrackpore which still bears the marks of thrilling historical outbreak of 1857, also known as first war of Indian Independence.
Now, Barrackpore station which has historical significance in connection to freedom struggle is all set to be redeveloped as Amrit Bharat station as foundation stone for the same is laid down by Hon’ble Prime Minister, Narendra Modi Ji prior 77th year of Independence Day celebration. The redevelopment cost of Barrackpore station amounts to Rs. 26.7 Crores. It involves preparation of Master Plans and their implementation in phases for improvement to existing façade, improvement to interiors, waiting halls, etc., concourse area development, platform flooring, platform ceiling cladding. The move will provide world-class passenger amenities at stations and thereby enhance the passengers experience.
As the scheme unfolds, the newly developed Barrackpore station under Amrit Bharat Station Scheme will reflect the harmonious blending of infrastructure and connectivity with the aspirations of locals of Barrackpore and adjoining areas. This will lead to elevating travel experience by way of:
• Elegant Station Building: A new station building will redefine Station’s architectural landscape, reflecting a modern and inviting design.
• Focus on Swachh Bharat: Keeping in step with the Swachh Bharat mission, the station will introduce a modular Sewage Treatment Plant, ensuring efficient sewage treatment and a cleaner environment.
• Aesthetic Platforms: Platforms will undergo a resurfacing and aesthetic uplift, with the introduction of captivating landscaping on platform walls.
• Passenger Amenities: Travelers will enjoy improved amenities, including better seating, drinking water facilities, and enhanced lighting and ventilation on platforms and within the station building.
• Enhanced Connectivity: A revamped foot over bridge, supplemented by additional lift and escalator facilities, will ease passenger movement and accessibility.
• Guidance and Information: Modernized train indication boards and passenger-friendly signages will facilitate seamless navigation within the station premises.
• Functional Upgrades: The existing booking office and other administrative buildings will undergo a thorough renovation, aligning them with the scheme’s overarching vision.
• Inclusivity: All improvements will be designed to be divyangjan (specially-abled) friendly, ensuring equal access and convenience for all.
With this significant step towards progress and better infrastructure, passengers, passenger associations, localities are very optimistic that this brilliant move of Central Government will create comfortable and convenient spaces for travellers, making their journeys more enjoyable and hassle-free
