In a proactive move to ensure the highest standards of operational integrity, a high-level safety audit team from South Eastern Railway conducted a rigorous inspection of the iconic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) on April 11, 2026.
The audit was led by a multi-disciplinary team of senior officials, ensuring a 360-degree evaluation of the narrow-gauge network’s infrastructure and safety protocols. The audit was spearheaded by the Principal Chief Safety Officer (PCSO), accompanied by a specialized panel including CSE ,CRSE/Freight ,CEE/OP,CE/Works,Dy. COM/SPL ,Safety Counsellors and Senior Section Engineers.
The inspection covered critical operational points from Rongtong (RTG) and Tindharia Workshop (TDH WS) to Kurseong (KGN), Ghum, and Darjeeling (DJ), including a detailed review of the Z-reverses and loops. Key highlights of the inspection included- Emergency Preparedness: A rigorous evaluation of system readiness and response protocols during simulated accident scenarios.
Infrastructure Audit: A window trailing inspection focused on track stability, the integrity of level crossings, and the maintenance of narrow-gauge curves. The visiting officers expressed their overall satisfaction with the state of operations at DHR and commended the team for their sustained efforts. They also offered valuable suggestions and advice to further strengthen safety protocols and maintenance practices in the days ahead
