Twelve April 2023 will be recorded as the most significant date in the history of Metro Railways in India, as the first underwater trial run of Metro railways took place under the Hooghly River in Kolkata thus ushering a new era in the public transporation system in connecting the twin cities of Kolkata and Howrah.
General Manager of Metro Railways , P. Uday Kumar Reddy travelled in the maiden run from Mahakaran to Howrah Maidan Station along with other top officials.
Incidentally, the first metro railways in India has set up by the central government at the City of Joy. And after so many years the Metro railways in Kolkata has once again scripted history.
“ In the next seven months there will be regular trial runs of metro railways in the Howrah Maidan to Esplande route before the regular operations will start,”said the General manager during this historic occasssion.
Mr. Kaushik Mitra, CPRO of Meytro railways said that it is the most significant day in the histoey of transport system in the state and after many hurdles the sucess has been achieved and it is a true Poila Boisakh Upahar (gift) to people of Bengal.
The first under water metro rail ( East- West Metro Corridor) in the country operated below 32 metres of the Hooghly River through a tunnel.Within 45 seconds the metro railways will pass through this 520 metre stretch. Commercial operation is likely to start by the end of this year.
Meanwhile, Metro to run 234 services on 14.04.2023 on Blue Line on the occasion of Dr. B.R. Ambedkar’s birthday. Services on Green Line and Purple Line will remain unchanged.
Some of the other underwater metro railways in the world are – Thames Tunnel, England, Mersey Tunnel – Liverpool, England (oldest),Transbay Tube – California, USA (for Bay Area Rapid Transit), Channel Tunnel – Inter country tunnel Connecting England to Northern France (longest undersea portion 37.9km), Marmaray Tunnel – Istanbul, Turkey (across Bosphorus strait), Gotthard base Tunnel connecting Zurich and Milan, Seikan Tunnel- Japan etc.
