WILDLIFE : ENDANGERED RED PANDA SPOTTED FOR THE FIRST TIME IN ARUNACHAL PRADESH IN TAWANG

An endangered Red Panda species has been spotted In Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh, confirms chief minister Prema Khandu.

Thus marking it as the first recorded sight of the red panda in the bordering district of the North eastern state of India.

“Adorable Little Red Panda Spotted in Tawang! These endangered species are found in Arunachal Pradesh, and this sighting is truly special. Let’s celebrate and spread awareness about the importance of protecting these beautiful creatures!,” tweets CMO of Arunachal Pradesh.

The species has been listed as Endangered on the IUCN Red List since 2015.

In 2005, WWF-India initiated a conservation programme in the eastern Himalayas in 2005. Two districts in Arunachal Pradesh — Tawang and West Kameng — were earmarked as focal areas. As a result of the awareness created by the WWF-India, two villages in the Pangchen Valley — Lumpo and Muchut — decided to work towards providing a safe and secure habitat to the Red Panda .

The conservation-friendly attitude of the Monpas has ensured that the beautiful Valley continues to provide a safe haven to the iconic species of the region.

Exemplify the guardianship of biodiversity by locals, these tiny villages in Arunachal are among the few truly successful community-based conservation models in India.

The habitat of the 50 percent of the  red pandas are the eastern himalayas. The name Panda is derived from a Nepali  word Ponya meaning bamboo or plant eating animal. It is the state animal of Sikkim.
