Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Mr. Bhupender Yadav announced a historic development under Project Cheetah. In a social media post on ‘X’, Mr. Bhupendar Yadav stated that Mukhi — the first Indian-born female Cheetah, aged 33 months — has given birth to five cubs, marking a landmark moment for India’s Cheetah reintroduction initiative.
Mr. Yadav highlighted that this is the first instance in recent history of an Indian-born Cheetah successfully reproducing. He noted that the event reflects strong signs of adaptation, health, and long-term viability of the species within Indian habitats.
“This significant development reinforces optimism about establishing a self-sustaining and genetically diverse cheetah population in India,” the Minister said, adding that the mother and cubs are doing well.
Mr. Bhupendar Yadav noted with elation that the achievement strengthens confidence in India’s ongoing conservation efforts and the future prospects of Project Cheetah.

The first cheetahs were brought to India on 17 September 2022, as part of the Project Cheetah of Government of India. A batch of eight cheetahs was flown in from Namibia in South Africa and released into the Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This reintroduction followed the cheetah’s extinction in India in 1952.
India’s current cheetah population is 32, which includes 21 cubs born in India and 11 adults originally translocated from African nations. The animals are located at the Kuno National Park and the Gandhi Sagar Wildlife Sanctuary in Madhya Pradesh. Of the total, 16 are cubs born in India and 11 are adults that were brought from Africa.
