NEW DELHI, 3 JANUARY 2023:
Union Minister for Environment ,Forest and Climate Change and Labour and Employment, Bhupender Yadav in his official social media post said he was thrilled to share that Kuno National Park has welcomed three new members. He said the cubs have been born to Namibian Cheetah Aasha.
Mr. Bhupendra Yadav said this is a roaring success for Project Cheetah, envisioned by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi to restore ecological balance.
The union minister for environment, forests and climate control has congratulated all experts involved in the project, the Kuno wildlife officials, and wildlife enthusiasts across India.
Twenty cheetahs have been reintroduced in India, while 8 are from Namibia, the rest 12 are from South Africa. On 17 September 2022, eight cheetahs from Namibia arrived in India. This is the first instance in the world of translocation of an animal species to another continent.
On February 2023, further 12 cheetahs have arrived from South Africa. Another Cheetah named Siyaya gave birth to four cubs, however only one cub has survived.
This is the second instance of African Cheetahs giving birth of cubs in Indian soil. At present Kuno National Park in Madhya Pradesh is the only forest where African Chettah species have been released.
India has planned to release ten to twelve cheetahs per year in the next one decade. However, so far nine African translocated Cheetah species have died in Kuno National Park.
The two remaining Asian cheetah species found in India were poached in 1947.
