The cake mixing ceremony is a pre-Christmas celebration that involves mixing the ingredients for a traditional plum cake: Cake mixing is not a contemporary practice but rather an old one which started back in the 17th century. Back in the 17th century cake mixing was done to mark the arrival of harvest season. where traditional liquors were mixed with sultanas, raisins, cashews, almonds, plums and peaches and the soaked nuts were stored in large containers to be used in Christmas baking.
Nowadays, hotels of the higher strata organise this community cake mixing ceremonies to bond and practice the tradition where you can register yourself and participate.
The tradition of cake mixing actually began in Europe where a whole family used to come together for the activity symbolising unity and hard work.
For cake mixing, almonds, cashews, raisins, dates, figs, dried cherries, pistachios, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, dried ginger, candied fruits, prunes, walnuts, sugar, eggs, all purpose flour are mixed in the right ratio.
Once combined well, this mixture is then soaked in a combination of fruit juices.
