TTT SPECIAL : “DREAM BIG, BUILD STRONG”

BY SUSHIL KUMAR SUMAN,

CHAIRMAN,

IISCO OFFICERS ASSOCIATION (IOA),

BURNPUR | 30 DECEMBER 2025

As the year 2025 approaches its conclusion, the Production Performance Report of IISCO Steel Plant (ISP), Burnpur emerges not merely as a compilation of numbers, but as a powerful narrative of discipline, resilience, and belief. Behind every tonne of steel, every heat of molten metal, and every wagon dispatched lies a deeper story—the story of an organisation that dared to dream big, prepared itself with patience, and is now building strong with confidence.

This report captures on-date, month-to-date, and yearly average performance of 2025, reflecting the collective effort of thousands of committed hands and minds working in harmony.

Consistency Is the New Excellence

Across the production chain, ISP’s 2025 performance reflects a mature, stabilised, and confident organisation.

Coke Ovens & Raw Materials

Both COB-10 and COB-11 have remained pillars of stability throughout the year. With COB-11 sustaining its highest-ever yearly rate of 99, and overall coke oven performance maintaining 100% efficiency, the foundation of ironmaking has remained robust. These figures reflect not luck, but maintenance discipline, operational readiness, and workforce commitment.

Sinter & Base Mix

The Sinter Plant—often described as the heartbeat of ironmaking—has delivered an average daily production exceeding 12,000 tonnes in 2025, achieving 101% annual performance despite month-end pressures. Achieving on-day peaks of 14,640 tonnes reinforces the plant’s inherent strength and flexibility.

Iron Making & Steel Making

The year 2025 has been exceptional for Hot Metal and Crude Steel:

Hot Metal averaged 8,500+ tonnes per day, with peaks touching 9,400 tonnes, achieving 101% annual performance.

Crude Steel averaged 8,100 tonnes per day, again delivering 101% yearly performance.

These numbers speak of a seamless Blast Furnace–SMS–CCP integration, where technology, people, and processes operate as one.

Rolling Mills: Strength in Motion

Among the rolling mills, WRM and Bar Mill have emerged as consistent performers:

Bar Mill recorded 103% monthly and 102% annual performance, setting benchmarks in productivity.

WRM sustained 101% yearly efficiency, reflecting operational stability.

The USM, while maintaining average levels (~77% annually), stands clearly identified as an area for focused improvement—a sign of a transparent and forward-looking organisation that confronts challenges openly rather than concealing them.

Finished Steel, Dispatch & Logistics

In 2025:

Semis stood out with 110% annual performance.

Finished Steel maintained stability at 94% yearly average.

Saleable Steel Dispatch achieved 98% annual performance, supported by a strong logistics backbone of 80 wagons and 28 trailers.
These achievements underline ISP’s capability not just to produce steel, but to deliver value efficiently.

Power, Utilities, and Support Systems

Stable power generation, controlled energy consumption, and reliable utility operations have quietly supported production excellence:
PBS-2 power generation averages remained close to yearly norms.

Calcined Lime production remained steady.

Even support institutions like Burnpur Hospital continued to perform reliably, reminding us that industrial success rests equally on human welfare.

“Sapna Bada Dekho” — Leadership That Inspires

When the Chairman-cum-Managing Director of SAIL, Amarendu Prakash, visited ISP, Burnpur, his message to officers and young managers—“Sapna Bada Dekho” (Dream Big)—reverberated far beyond the auditorium.

Dreaming big, as he emphasised, is not fantasy. It is conviction. It is the courage to believe that today’s position is not the final destination. It is the discipline to work relentlessly toward a higher goal.

This philosophy resonates deeply with the words of A. P. J. Abdul Kalam, who once said:

“Dreams are not what you see when you sleep; dreams are those that don’t let you sleep.”

CMD Amarendu Prakash’s message reflects this very truth: dreams demand preparation, effort, and teamwork.

Not Lucky—Prepared: The ISP Reality

When some described ISP’s second-phase expansion as “luck,” CMD Sir corrected them with quiet clarity:
“Not lucky—prepared.”

ISP had land, infrastructure, technical capability, and—most importantly—a dedicated workforce ready. The performance of 2025 proves that preparation creates opportunity.
From Dreams to Determination: The ISP Spirit

One of the most remarkable achievements in recent history has been ISP’s national record of 14,000 heats from a single BOF lining, the highest ever in India. This milestone significantly reduced cost per tonne, power consumption, and refractory usage—transforming operational excellence into economic strength.

CMD Sir’s visit to the Blast Furnace area, where production crossed 9,000 tonnes per day, culminated in a simple yet powerful challenge:
“Set your next target at 11,000 tonnes.”

That sentence captures the essence of leadership—never allowing success to breed complacency.

Youth, Leadership, and the Human Core

At the Young Managers’ Interaction Session at Burnpur Club, CMD Sir posed a defining question:

“Why should ISP be only the best in India? Why not the best in the world?”

This is not rhetoric; it is a challenge to mindset. ISP has already proven its capability. The next chapter is about global benchmarks in quality, efficiency, and sustainability.

In this journey, the IISCO Officers’ Association (IOA) plays a vital role. Its guiding belief—

“Sashakt IISCO, Sashakt SAIL Adhikari –

“Samay ki Maang”—recognises that strong institutions are built on respected, motivated, and engaged officers.

ISP: The Dream Factory of Indian Steel

Every blast furnace flame, every BOF heat, every rolling mill spark at ISP tells a story—of dreams turning into steel. ISP today is not merely a production unit; it is a symbol of India’s industrial ambition.

The “Dream Big” philosophy has moved beyond motivation; it has become a mission. From Dr. Kalam’s vision of a developed India to CMD Amarendu Prakash’s call for global excellence, and IOA’s commitment to unity and dignity, one belief unites all:

Great things happen when people dare to dream—and work together.

Conclusion: Building the Future Together

The 2025 production performance confirms that ISP is no longer chasing stability—it has achieved it. The journey ahead is about scale, sustainability, and global leadership.

Dream Big.

Work Hard.

Stay United.

Build Strong.

That is the spirit of IISCO.

That is the future of SAIL.
