In a powerful demonstration of community leadership and environmental stewardship, the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) joined forces with State Administration, Forest Department and HELP (Health, Environment & Leadership Promotion) to launch a major plantation drive at the historic Kurseong Railway Station today, marking World Environment Day. Aligned with this year’s poignant national theme, “Ek Ped Maa Ke Naam” (A Tree in the Name of Mother), the initiative aims to combat local deforestation, enhance urban green cover, and foster a deep, personal connection between the community and the environment.

The event saw an extraordinary turnout of top administrative, civil, and security leaders from the region, signaling a unified institutional commitment to the cause. Distinguished officials in attendance included:

Local Schools and Colleges Join the Drive* A major highlight of the event was the overwhelming participation of the region’s academic community. The youth joined the dignitaries side-by-side, getting their hands in the soil to plant trees and taking a collective pledge to care for the saplings as they grow, ensuring a lasting ecological legacy for the hills. The Effort by DHR underscores a long-term vision to integrate green initiatives into public spaces. The newly planted trees will be systematically monitored and nurtured to ensure high survival rates, contributing directly to the climate resilience of the region.
