As Hyderabad’s appetite for regional Indian cuisines continues to grow, the city welcomes a new culinary destination that brings the warmth, simplicity and rich traditions of Assam to the table. Aakhol – An Assamese Restaurant has opened in Kokapet, offering an authentic home-style dining experience inspired by the food, culture and hospitality of Northeast India.

Founded by Dr. Alpaxee Kashyap and her husband Akhil, Aakhol is more than a restaurant—it is the continuation of a family legacy built around food and hospitality. Dr. Alpaxee’s maternal grandfather established the iconic Laxmi Cabin in Guwahati’s Fancy Bazar in 1942, one of the city’s oldest and most loved sweet shops, remembered for its legendary samosas. Decades later, her parents carried forward the family’s passion by establishing Aarian Woods, one of Guwahati’s pioneering boutique resorts.

When Dr. Alpaxee moved to Hyderabad in 2019, she found herself missing the familiar flavours of home. Unable to find authentic Assamese cuisine in the city, she started Aakhol in 2025 as a small home kitchen, serving carefully prepared meals on a one-day pre-order basis. What began as a passion project soon earned a loyal following among both the Assamese community and Hyderabad’s food enthusiasts, inspiring the couple to open a full-fledged restaurant.

“When I moved to Hyderabad, I realised I missed more than just the food—I missed the feeling of home. Aakhol is our way of sharing that feeling with the city while giving fellow Assamese a place they can call their own. We hope every guest leaves with a deeper appreciation of Assam’s cuisine, culture and hospitality,” says Dr. Alpaxee Kashyap, Founder, Aakhol.

Staying true to its roots, Aakhol deliberately avoids adapting its recipes to suit local tastes. Instead, it celebrates the understated elegance of Assamese cuisine, where fresh ingredients, subtle spices and traditional cooking techniques take centre stage. Mustard oil, green chillies and seasonal produce enhance each dish without overpowering its natural flavours, offering diners an experience that is refreshingly different from conventional Indian restaurant fare.

The menu showcases signature dishes such as Bamboo Shoot Fish, traditional pork and chicken preparations, and thoughtfully curated vegetarian and non-vegetarian Assamese thalis, making them the perfect introduction to the cuisine. Essential ingredients, including bamboo shoots, xoru aloo and kaji nemu, Assam’s iconic citrus fruit, are sourced directly from Guwahati to preserve their authentic flavours. Guests can also discover regional favourites like dali bota, fish chutney and sesame chutney, while those seeking a fiery challenge can request the famous bhoot jolokia achaar.

Desserts complete the experience with traditional favourites such as White Payokh, Black Payokh and Pati-Sapta Pitha each reflecting the same philosophy of simplicity, balance and authenticity.

Beyond the food, Aakhol offers an immersive cultural experience. Inspired by the architecture of Dr. Alpaxee’s grandmother’s home in Bharalu, Guwahati, the restaurant recreates the warmth of a traditional Assamese household. Guests can explore a handcrafted décor wall, a legacy wall narrating the family’s journey, and a thoughtfully curated library featuring contemporary Assamese literature alongside books celebrating the region’s rich culinary and cultural heritage.

With Aakhol, the founders hope to introduce Hyderabad not only to the authentic flavours of Assam but also to its stories, traditions and warm hospitality—one meal at a time.
