A five-day Certificate Course on Heritage Tourism Management was inaugurated today through a joint collaboration between Nalanda University and the Tourism Department, Government of Bihar. All 60 seats were filled in the very first edition of the programme. Participants include tourist guides, tour operators, wildlife interpreters, museum professionals, research scholars, and professionals associated with the tourism and heritage sectors. This five-day Management Development Programme (MDP) is being organised jointly by the University’s School of Management Studies and School of Historical Studies.

Addressing the inaugural session, Nalanda University Vice-Chancellor Professor Sachin Chaturvedi said, “Tourist guides are the first point of contact for any visitor. How people understand Bihar’s civilisational heritage depends to a great extent on their interaction and presentation.”

He said that tourism is increasingly becoming a specialised field. In such a scenario, merely having knowledge of historical facts is not sufficient for a guide. An integrated understanding of history, archaeology, art, environment, culture, and language is what makes a guide a better interpreter. He expressed confidence that tourism would become one of the major pillars of Bihar’s economy in the coming years, making the development of trained human resources the need of the hour. Participants who perform exceptionally well will also be offered the opportunity to enrol in the University’s short-term language courses at concessional fees in the future.

Organised under the Sahabhagita Samvad initiative, this residential course integrates history, heritage, tourism management, communication skills, and field studies into a single programme. Conducted at a nominal fee, the initiative is an important effort to connect local communities with the University’s academic expertise while giving fresh momentum to Bihar’s cultural identity and responsible tourism.
