As part of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway’s Station Mahotsav celebrating 100 years of its heritage stations, the DH railway is launching a ‘one time pioneering tech-focused initiative the Special AI Coding Train Ride’ (5th September) running on the Kurseong–Darjeeling–Kurseong route.
Merging Heritage with Tech:
Designed to harmonize century-old railway heritage with modern, future-oriented technology skills, transforming a classic UNESCO World Heritage journey into a digital learning hub.
Live Onboard Coding Sessions:
Students from the hill region will board the train and participate in hands-on, live coding sessions utilizing onboard digital platforms.
Empowering Hill Youth:
The initiative specifically aims to boost technology and computer literacy among local students, equipping them with essential computational skills directly from the moving vintage coaches.
Route:
Operating between Kurseong and Darjeeling, providing students an inspiring backdrop as they learn to write code while traversing the scenic mountain rail network. While the AI Coding Express runs on the Kurseong–Darjeeling–Kurseong line to introduce hill youth to real-time coding onboard a moving World Heritage train, Darjeeling Station will host a full slate of festive activities. DHR-themed art, photo, and interactive competitions aimed at engaging local students and fostering pride in regional history. Live musical performances, traditional dance showcases, and student felicitations.The premiere of the Darjeeling Station short film, exhibitions of regional artifacts, and themed photo galleries.
Following its September debut, the AI Coding Programme will make a return during the Ghum Winter Festival 2026. The initiative will expand into a structured, competitive format where young students from across the hills can solve challenges and showcase their programming skills. Designed to inspire local youth to master coding, software logic, and digital technology the “languages of the future”,while celebrating the region’s century-old steam and diesel heritage._
