Kukru, located in Bhainsdehi tehsil of Betul district, is an untouched scenic destination renowned for its pristine natural beauty, lush greenery and tranquil surroundings. Perched at an elevation of approximately 3,668 feet above sea level, the hill region is enveloped in clouds, mist, dense forests and verdant landscapes during the monsoon. The flowing Adna River, mixed forests and towering Telia Teak trees add to its natural charm. With pleasant weather throughout the year, Kukru is an ideal destination for nature lovers as well as trekking and biking enthusiasts. Its Sunrise Point and Sunset Point are major attractions. Kukru is also known for its coffee plantations, Kodo-Kutki millet, amla, honey, harra, baheda, white musli and bhilwa forest produce. Traditional millet-based delicacies and handicrafts made from forest produce and wood further reflect the region’s rich cultural and economic identity.

Coffee Plantations Give Kukru a Distinct Identity:

The Kukru-Khamla region is also renowned for its historic coffee plantations. Coffee cultivation began here in 1944, giving the region a distinctive identity. High-quality coffee is cultivated only in a few regions of the country. Kukru has an Arabica coffee estate spread across approximately 110 acres, of which coffee is currently cultivated on 10 acres. The coffee plantations are being conserved and promoted by the Madhya Pradesh Eco Tourism Development Board and the Forest Department.

Eco-Tourism and Tourism Infrastructure to be Expanded :

During his recent visit to Kukru, Chief Minister Dr. Mohan Yadav announced several key initiatives to develop the destination as one of Madhya Pradesh’s prominent tourist attractions. An integrated tourism circuit connecting Kukru, Chikhaldara, Muktagiri and Melghat will be developed at an estimated cost of approximately ₹15 crore. The project includes the expansion of eco-tourism, upgradation of the Sunrise and Sunset Points, development of a modern eco-resort equipped with contemporary facilities, expansion of tourism infrastructure, and promotion of trekking, nature trails and other adventure activities.

Employment and Self-Employment Opportunities for Tribal Communities:

Chief Minister Dr. Yadav has also announced the launch of a Homestay Scheme to connect local tribal communities with tourism activities. These homestays will be operated in accordance with the functioning model of the Madhya Pradesh Tourism Development Corporation, while online booking facilities will be provided through Madhya Pradesh Tourism. The initiative will create new avenues of employment and self-employment for local communities. At the same time, it will offer visitors an opportunity to experience the region’s tribal culture and local way of life firsthand.

Easy Accessibility to Kukru:

Kukru is located approximately 270 kilometres from Bhopal and around 90 kilometres from Betul. Regular train services are available between Bhopal and Betul, including the Bhopal–Nagpur Vande Bharat Express, Chhattisgarh Express and several other major trains. From Betul, Kukru can be conveniently reached by taxi and other local transport services. By road, travellers can drive from Bhopal to Betul and further via Shahpur to Kukru. The final stretch through the hills offers breathtaking natural vistas.

A Confluence of Nature, Culture and Eco-Tourism:

Kukru offers a harmonious blend of natural beauty, coffee plantations, tribal culture and eco-tourism. An Eco-Tourism Centre provides rest house accommodation for visitors, while trained staff of the Madhya Pradesh Eco Tourism Development Board (MPEDB) ensure the availability of essential services. During the monsoon season, Kukru’s lush greenery and serene natural surroundings make it one of Madhya Pradesh’s most distinctive nature tourism destinations.
