In a decisive move against the illegal trade of prohibited goods, the Airport Customs Commissionerate of the Chennai Customs Zone conducted a major destruction drive on March 26, 2026.

The operation, held at a Destruction Yard in Gummidipoondi, saw the disposal of various seized items including 8.3 lakh sticks of foreign-origin cigarettes, 4,098 pieces of e-cigarettes, and 138 packages containing hundreds of liquor bottles.

Additionally, the disposal included 445 units of old and used electronic items, along with 10 carton boxes of medicines and beauty products, all with an estimated total market value of approximately Rs. 4.1 Crores. These goods were attempted to be smuggled into India in contravention of the provisions of the Indian Customs Act, 1962 along with allied acts.

As the illegally smuggled aforesaid products are non-compliant of statuary guidelines and warnings, they were disposed off by way of destruction as per prescribed guidelines by the Department of Customs.
