AVIATION : INDIGO HOLDS 50% OF MARKET SHARE IN AIR CARGO SECTOR IN THE COUNTRY, WILL ADD MORE AIRCRAFTS : SAYS MAHESH KUMAR MALIK

Indigo Airlines or Interglobe Aviations Limited is all set to add more than 500  aircrafts in its fleet, which will help in not only increasing its further penetration into virgin and new routes in passenger aircrafts but also in the air cargo sector, says Mahesh Kumar Malik, COO ( cargo) of Indigo today.

Indigo Airlines, India’s leading airlines has begin air cargo operations from the Air Cargo Terminal -1 at Kazi Nazrul Islam Airport in Andal, near Durgapur today.

Talking To The Travel and Tourism Times, Mr. Mahesh Kumar Malik, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Cargo of Indigo said that the in  2007, Indigo started air cargo operations with six aircrafts  but today  have 317 aircrafts after 16 years and carry 1000 tonnes daily which is about 3,25,000 tonnes of air cargo annually through 26 airports in the country and has over 50 percent market share.

“ In the Paris Air Show recently  we have already booked more aircrafts and soon out fleet will get extended. said that one percent increase in cargo transport maens about 6 to 7 percent increase in import or export. From South Bengal  districts now onwards farmers will easily supply the fish, seasonal fruits and vegetables and even fishlings through this air cargo system and  it will save a time of almost five to six hours,” he added.

“The Cargo Terminal of Indigo will facilitate trade and faster movement of goods across the country. The catchment  area extending upto Dhanbad and Bokaro districts of Jharkhand has large potential for both outbound and inbound cargo movement. The main cargo expected to move in and out include, seasonal  fruits like litchi and mango, vegetables, fish, fish seeds, Bengali sweets, e-commerce, pharmaceuticals, medical samples, machinery parts and spares etc. As per study, cargo movement in the next 8-10 years is expected to reach about 25,000 metric tons,” said Dr. Sashi Panja, the West Bengal minister of commerce, industry and enterprise.

“The newly constructed Cargo Terminal is equipped with X-BIS machine, CCTV Surveillance, fire fighting system, office space and other facilities to enable smooth movement of air cargo. Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited, the owner of the KNIA airport, has constructed this terminal. Requisite regulatory approvals have already been obtained for this purpose for commencement of cargo operations. The Cargo Terminal is expected to enhance the airport business and bring in

additional revenue streams for the airport,” says Mr. Utsav Parekh, Director of Bengal Aerotropolis Projects Limited, the operators of the country’s first  private Greenfield domestic airport.
