On the occasion of World Heritage Day (18th April), the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway (DHR) organized a special awareness and outreach programme dedicated to children, with the aim of fostering appreciation for heritage conservation and preservation.

The session focused on sensitizing young participants about the importance of protecting and preserving heritage assets, particularly the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Through interactive discussions and engaging activities, children were introduced to the historical and cultural significance of this iconic mountain railway.

As part of the programme, a specially arranged train ride was organized to provide the children with a firsthand experience of the unique charm and legacy of DHR. The journey allowed them to connect with the living heritage of the railway in an immersive manner.

The train ride culminated at Ghum Railway Station, home to one of the highest railway stations in India. The participants were given a guided tour of the Ghum Railway Museum, where they gained insights into the rich history, engineering marvels, and evolution of the Darjeeling Himalayan Railway.

Celebrations will continue over the next two days, with similar activities and competitions planned for children to further promote awareness and engagement with heritage preservation.

In addition, Railway and contractor staff who have performed exceptionally well in the field of heritage conservation were felicitated today at Elysia Place, Kurseong, in recognition of their dedicated efforts and contributions.

The initiative was well received and served as an important step towards instilling a sense of responsibility and pride among the younger generation for safeguarding heritage for the future.

The Darjeeling Himalayan Railway remains committed to promoting awareness and engagement activities that highlight the significance of heritage conservation.
